Happy everyone! What do Zoo Keepers do? Zoo keepers care for the animals. Sounds simple, right? Zoo keepers are usually seen cleaning their environments, providing specialized diets for them, and designing exciting enrichment opportunities for them to enjoy. In truth, caring for the animals involves a wide range of knowledge and skill beyond this as well. Zoo keepers must be experts at understanding animal behavior, behavioral ecology, nutrition, animal training, and more!
If they work at a small zoo like , they also serve as their own veterinary technicians, botanists, mechanics, maintenance crew, aquarium (also called life support system) specialists, carpenters, and more! Don’t forget one of their favorite activities – educating and inspiring visitors to care about the animals! Phew, it’s a lot of work, and it takes a lot of training.
