Pastels on the Plaza

The first Saturday in October is the day families, art aficionados and sponsors gather on the Arcata Plaza for the largest “art show” of the year. The gallery sidewalk is surrounded with music and the fresh produce of the local farmers market. This benefit for Northcoast Children's Services is supported by locals that sponsor an artist by making a donation of $150 or $250 for a square of sidewalk art. This event is free for artists and pastels are provided.

I's finally time for Pastels! We hope you can make it out to the plaza this weekend and see all the wonderful art. Thank you to all of the businesses who sponsored and the artists who have devoted their time and creativity to this event that benefits over 800 low income children and families of Humboldt and Del Norte counties each year. A number of artists have been painting fire hydrants downtown along the G and H and Eighth and Ninth streets corridors. 🧑‍🎨 On Saturday, Oct. 7, join the City of Arcata, Playhouse Arts and local artists to celebrate this public beautification project, as well as all public art in Arcata during Pastels on the Plaza from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Pick up a brochure detailing the hydrant art locations and participating artists, and enjoy the new public art in our city!

This Call for Artists was made possible through American Rescue Plan Act funding and an Infill Infrastructure Grant through the California Department of Housing and Community Development prioritized for public art and beautification projects, and seeks to implement the Arcata Strategic Arts Plan. A Content Review Panel composed of local arts and cultural leaders reviewed artist submissions and made selections for this first Call for Art.

When autumn comes to Arcata, Pastels on the Plaza returns to Humboldt County. Artists gather on the first Saturday of October every year to lend their talent for the day. Each artist creates an original piece of art representing a business sponsor. Artists, businesses and children are what this day is all about.
