The California Native Plant Society (CNPS) invites the public to "Tribal Uses and Stewardship of Plants, Habitats, and Ecosystems," Wednesday, March 11,2020, at 7:30 p.m. at Six Rivers Masonic Lodge, 251 Bayside Road, near 7th and Union
in Arcata.

Frank Lake, a researcher with the Fire and Fuels Program of the Forest Service Pacific Southwest Research Station in Arcata, will give a presentation focused on California tribal uses and stewardship of plants.

Northwest California offers a dynamic range of ecosystems, including coastal headlands, redwood, oak woodland-prairies, Douglas-fir, tanoak, and interior mixed conifer/hardwood forests. Frank will take the audience on a historical,
ethnographic, and ethnobotanical journey across these ecosystems, using data and imagery to illustrate the complexity and diversity of tribal knowledge. He will
focus on some of the plants used for basketry, food, and other utilitarian purposes that are associated with the tribal stewardship of habitat. The traditional practices he will describe will be used to guide collaborative restoration efforts into the future.

Doors open at 7:00 p.m. for snacks, sales, and socializing. The North Coast Chapter of CNPS offers free public programs on the second Wednesday of each month, September through May. 707-822-2015, www.northcoastcnps.org.

physiology and biodiversity in native Oregon White Oak woodlands. Len recently received his degree from HS U. He is currently the lead Vegetation Management Technician for Sonoma County Regional Parks, where he is establishing an early detection network for invasive weeds, monitoring post-fire landscapes, and restoring rare plant habitats. He will share his senior capstone project, which assessed the ecological health of two Darlingtonia fens in the Mill Creek Addition of Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park.

UPDATE: Dr. Dawn Goley, Director of the HSU Marine Mammal Education and Research Program is coordinating the marine mammal stranding response for the beached humpback whale that has been beached at Samoa since yesterday morning.

Currently the whale is alive in the surf zone. The HSU Marine Stranding Program is working closely with NOAA. They are doing all they can to ensure the safety of the whale and the public.

The whale became stranded on the beach after becoming entangled in fishing gear yesterday, 10/23/19. Rescuers have since cleared away the cordage that snared the animal and had hoped that the high tide just after 8 p.m. last night might be enough to buoy it out to sea. But it was not. There is another high tide at 10 a.m. this morning.

We will provide updates as they come in.
