Our molecule of the week is….

Carvone!!
Carvone is a monoterpene that exists as (R)-carvone ans (S)-carvone. (R)-carvone is recognized for having a flavor and aroma of mint! It is most commonly used for candies, personal-care products, air fresheners, and aromatherapy. In 2009, the EPA registered it for use in insect repellents! (S)-carvone is a key component of caraway and dill seed oils! It has a lot fewer uses, but is used in a popular liqueur in Europe(Kümmel) and as a way to stop premature sprouting in potatoes. About half of the commercial product of (R)-carvone is synthesized from (R)-limonene, another monoterpene.

Black History Month is a wonderful time to recognize the amazing science that has been given to this world by POC! Today we’d like to recognize ✨Alice Ball✨(1892-1916).
Alice Ball was born in Seattle, Washington, and graduated with her undergrad in pharmaceutical chemistry(1912) and pharmacy(1914) from the University of Washington. After this, she joined her family in Hawaii, attended University of Hawaii, and was the first black person and first woman to graduate with a masters of science in chemistry in 1915. She was then offered a teaching position and became the first woman professor at University of Hawaii at the age of 23. Her mane research was in finding successful treatments for leprosy patients. During her research, she was able to create the very first injectable leprosy treatment. Unfortunately, she passed away at 24 and was unable to witness the amazing benefits that her treatments brought to the public.
Even more unfortunate, as was common at the time, a male colleague to credit for all of her research and work after she had passed. However, in 2000 Alice Ball was recognized by the University of Hawaii for her discoveries and dedicated a plaque to her and declared February 29 as “Alice Ball Day”.
I would like to also take this time to emphasize the importance of recognizing black scientists and women today that have not been recognized in the past. Alice Ball is but another example of a successful woman whose work was taken credit for by a male colleague who had no intentions of recognizing the importance of her work.
In celebration of Black History Month
We would like to recognize:
Winifred Burks-Houck who was an environmental organic chemist and first woman president of the national organization for the professional advancement of black chemists and chemical engineers. Born in Alabama in 1950, a descendent of Harriet Tubman. First began as an environmental chemist in Livermore, California. She was integral in establishing the NOBCChE on the west coast. Her credits for the institution are:
*increasing the number of students and professional chapters by more than 100%
*increased NOBCChE visibility
*instituting new scholarships through public and private entities
*updating telephone and computer systems at the National Office
It’s important to not only recognize our black chemists and scientists, but especially women of color who are in STEM!
