Storing insulin and CGM supplies properly during the summer is crucial to maintain their efficacy and accuracy. Here are some best practices:
🌡️ Keep Insulin Cool: Insulin should be stored in a refrigerator at temperatures between 36°F and 46°F (2°C to 8°C). When traveling, use a cool pack or an insulated bag to keep insulin cool but not frozen, as freezing can render it ineffective.
☀️ Avoid Direct Sunlight: Insulin and CGM supplies should be kept out of direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to heat and sunlight can degrade insulin and damage the sensitive electronics in CGM sensors and transmitters.
☣️ Store CGM Sensors in a Cool, Dry Place: CGM sensors should be stored at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. Avoid leaving sensors in hot cars or near heat sources.
📅 Monitor Expiration Dates: Regularly check expiration dates on insulin and CGM supplies. Using supplies past their expiration date can affect their performance and accuracy.
🚨 Plan for Emergencies: Have a backup plan for keeping insulin cool in case of power outages or refrigeration failures. Gel packs or portable coolers can be used as temporary solutions.
By following these best practices, you can ensure that your insulin and CGM supplies remain effective throughout the summer.
Popular to contrary belief, CGMs are NOT waterproof. Many continuous glucose monitors are designed to be water-resistant.
This means that CGM users can engage in various activities, such as showering, swimming, or exercising, without worrying about damaging the device. This feature enhances their usability in daily life, while still maintaining accurate glucose monitoring even when exposed to moisture; but they can get water damage if not careful. The Sensor should not be taken below 3 feet of water, and should not be submerged in water for more than 30 minutes.

By promoting education, outreach, and screenings, we can empower individuals to take charge of their health and make informed lifestyle choices to reduce their risk of developing diabetes or its complications. We know that when properly controlled and managed, people with diabetes can live long and complication-free lives.
However, there is a huge emphasis on being controlled and managed and you cannot take action without being in the know. Due to the fact that some symptoms can be subtle, many signs are overlooked. This is why we encourage anyone who may believe something is "off" or out of the ordinary to get screened by their healthcare provider.
We're curious to know, how did you get diagnosed?

But if it goes below the healthy range and is not treated, it can get dangerous. Be sure to be mindful of any symptoms you may experience when this happens.
The only sure way to know whether you are experiencing low blood glucose is to check your blood glucose levels. Be sure to talk to your diabetes care team about your own blood glucose targets, and what level is too low for you.
