When are those baby teeth coming in?!!!

08/15/2024

Any advice on teething?
From six months to age 3, your child may have tender gums when teeth erupt. Many children like a clean teething ring, cool spoon or cold wet washcloth. Some parents swear by a chilled ring; others simply rub the baby’s gums with a clean finger.

He received his undergraduate degree from TCU, dental degree from the University of Oklahoma, and certificate in pediatric dentistry from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He is a board-certified pediatric dentist, priding himself in providing individualized care for his patients. In his spare time, Dr. Jamison enjoys spending time with his wife Meggan, son Hudson, and daughter Ellis. He also spends time cheering on the horned frogs and playing golf.

A note from Dr. Ketchel:
I feel particularly fortunate to reunite with Dr. Jamison at APD. I have been searching for a dentist that I think will be the best match for the practice. I feel like I found a perfect fit with Dr. Jamison. We previously worked together in the early 2010s and share similar treatment philosophies. He is an excellent and experienced clinician. I have known him for decades as a friend and dental colleague. 🦷✨ It's time to dive into the world of fluoride toothpaste for your little one's dental health! 🌟 Here's the scoop on when to start using fluoride toothpaste with your child:

🌈 When should my child start using fluoride toothpaste? 🌈

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends the following guidelines:

👉 Age 0-2: For children under two years old, start brushing their teeth as soon as the first tooth appears. Use a smear of fluoride toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice.

👉 Age 2-6: From two to six years old, increase the amount of fluoride toothpaste to a pea-sized dab. Continue brushing their teeth twice a day, emphasizing thorough cleaning and proper technique.

💡 Why is fluoride toothpaste important? 💡

Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay. It plays a crucial role in preventing cavities and promoting optimal dental health.

💦 A few tips for using fluoride toothpaste effectively:

1️⃣ Supervise brushing: Until your child is around 6 or 7 years old, closely supervise their brushing to ensure they use the right amount of toothpaste and practice proper technique.

2️⃣ Don't swallow: Remind your child not to swallow the toothpaste. Teach them to spit it out after brushing.

3️⃣ Make it fun: Turn brushing into an exciting adventure! Sing songs, use colorful toothbrushes, or create a brushing chart to make oral care a fun and enjoyable experience.

Remember, fluoride toothpaste, along with regular dental check-ups and a healthy oral hygiene routine, is key to maintaining a cavity-free smile for your child!

Is your bottled water PH affecting your teeth?
Recent Study:
The top eight bottled water brands consumed were, in order of popularity, Kirkland, Fiji, Smartwater, Nestlé Pure Life, Arrowhead, Dasani, Crystal Geyser, and Aquafina. Our analysis revealed that three out of these eight brands exhibited pH levels below the critical threshold of 5.5, indicating a potential risk to tooth enamel. Specifically, Smartwater, Dasani, and Aquafina had a pH level of 5, while Nestlé Pure Life approached the critical value with a pH of 6.

We know that LOWER PH, the more acidic the environment = Easier to get cavities

Thanks to RDH magazine for a fabulous and informative article!

Cavities in baby teeth, also known as dental caries or tooth decay, are caused by a combination of factors. The primary culprits include:

✨Bacteria: Streptococcus mutans and other bacteria in the mouth produce acids when they come into contact with sugars from food and beverages. These acids can attack the tooth enamel, leading to decay.

✨Sugary Foods and Drinks: Foods and beverages high in sugars and carbohydrates provide a food source for bacteria in the mouth. When sugars are left on teeth for extended periods, bacteria feed on them and produce acids that erode tooth enamel.

✨Poor Oral Hygiene: Inadequate brushing and flossing allow plaque—a sticky film of bacteria and food particles—to accumulate on teeth. If not removed regularly, plaque can break down enamel and lead to cavities.

✨Frequent Snacking: Snacking throughout the day, especially on sugary or starchy foods, exposes teeth to constant acid attacks, increasing the risk of cavities.

✨Lack of Fluoride: Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and makes it more resistant to decay. Insufficient fluoride intake or lack of exposure to fluoride through toothpaste, water, or dental treatments can contribute to cavities.

✨Early Childhood Caries (ECC): ECC is a specific form of severe tooth decay in young children, often associated with prolonged exposure to sugary liquids, such as milk, formula, fruit juice, or sweetened beverages, particularly through bottle feeding or frequent use of sippy cups.

✨Genetics: Some individuals may be more prone to cavities due to genetic factors that affect the strength and composition of their tooth enamel.

✨Preventing cavities in baby teeth involves maintaining good oral hygiene habits, including regular brushing (using fluoride toothpaste) and flossing, as well as limiting sugary snacks and drinks. Dental check-ups and cleanings with a pediatric dentist are also essential to monitor dental health and address any emerging issues early on. Additionally, applying dental sealants and ensuring adequate fluoride intake can help strengthen and protect the teeth from decay.

We talk about all of that at your dental appointment!

What is a Dental Sealant?✨A dental sealant is a thin, protective coating that is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, specifically the premolars and molars. These teeth have grooves and fissures that can be difficult to clean with a toothbrush, making them more susceptible to tooth decay. Dental sealants are primarily used to prevent cavities in these vulnerable areas.

Here's how dental sealants work and why they are beneficial:

✨Sealing Grooves and Pits: The chewing surfaces of molars and premolars have deep grooves and pits that can trap food particles and bacteria. These areas are often hard to reach with regular toothbrushing.
✨Protection from Decay: Dental sealants are made of a resin material that is applied to the tooth's surface. They "seal" off these grooves and pits, creating a smooth, protective barrier that prevents food, plaque, and bacteria from getting into these hard-to-clean areas.
✨Painless and Non-Invasive: Applying dental sealants is a painless and non-invasive procedure. It doesn't require drilling or removing tooth structure, making it an excellent preventive measure for both children and adults.
✨Long-Lasting: Dental sealants can last for several years, providing protection during the most cavity-prone years, which are typically during childhood and adolescence.
✨Quick Application: The application of dental sealants is a straightforward process that usually takes just a few minutes per tooth. After the teeth are cleaned and prepared, the sealant material is applied and then hardened using a special light.

✨Dental sealants are especially beneficial for children as their permanent molars come in, typically between the ages of 6 and 12. However, they can also be used for adults who are at risk of developing cavities in these areas. While dental sealants are effective in preventing decay, it's essential to maintain good oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, for comprehensive dental care.

✨A space maintainer is a dental device used to keep space open for permanent teeth to come in properly when a baby tooth is lost early. Here are common situations when a child may need a space maintainer:

✅Early Loss of Baby Teeth:
If a baby tooth is lost early due to trauma, decay, or other reasons before the permanent tooth is ready to erupt, a space maintainer might be recommended to prevent adjacent teeth from shifting into the empty space.
✅Premature Tooth Extraction:
In some cases, a baby tooth may need to be extracted prematurely due to severe decay, infection, or trauma. A space maintainer can be used to preserve the space for the permanent tooth to come in correctly.
✅Congenitally Missing Teeth:
If a child is missing a baby tooth or has congenitally missing permanent teeth, space maintainers may be used to hold space for future tooth replacement options.
✅Orthodontic Treatment Planning:
Space maintainers can be part of an overall orthodontic treatment plan to ensure that there's adequate space for permanent teeth to come in properly and to guide their alignment.
✅Delayed Tooth Eruption:
If a permanent tooth is delayed in erupting, a space maintainer may be used to prevent unwanted movement of neighboring teeth into the empty space.
✅Certain Medical Conditions:
Some medical conditions or treatments may affect tooth development or cause early tooth loss, necessitating the use of space maintainers.
✅Certain Habits:
Prolonged thumb-sucking, tongue thrusting, or other oral habits can affect dental development and may necessitate the use of space maintainers.

✨It's important to consult with a pediatric dentist or orthodontist to determine if a space maintainer is necessary for your child. They will evaluate your child's specific situation, considering factors like dental development, oral health, and any potential future orthodontic needs, to make an informed recommendation. Early intervention and proper dental care can help ensure the healthy development of your child's permanent teeth.

GAPS ARE GOOD!
These gaps, also known as diastemas, are like nature's way of saying, "Room for growth, my little one!" Here's why these gaps are the unsung heroes of childhood dental adventures:

Space for Permanent Teeth: These gaps pave the way for a smooth entrance, preventing any tooth traffic jams and ensuring a picture-perfect alignment as the grown-up teeth make their grand debut.

Eruption Sequence: These tiny teeth leave behind just enough room for the adult teeth to follow suit – a dental dance of perfect timing.

Facilitates Speech Development: Those gaps give the tongue some breathing room, allowing it to master the art of pronunciation. "S" and "th" sounds become a breeze, turning your little one into a linguistic maestro!

Every dental journey is a unique adventure! If you spy any smile irregularities or have concerns about your tiny tooth adventurer, give us a call to set up your next visit.

Preparing your child for their dental visit can make a big difference in their experience. Start by talking about the dentist in a positive and reassuring way. 🗣️ Share the excitement of a healthy smile! 😁 Here are a few tips to help ease any nerves:

1️⃣ Talk & Listen: Engage in an open conversation about the dentist, addressing any questions or concerns your child may have. Listening and validating their feelings is key!

2️⃣ Play Pretend: Use pretend play to simulate a dental visit. Let your child be the dentist and you the patient. This playful approach helps familiarize them with the process.

3️⃣ Read Fun Books: Choose children's books about visiting the dentist to read together. It can be a fun and educational way to ease anxiety and build excitement.

4️⃣ Be a Role Model: Show your child that dental visits are a regular part of staying healthy. Share your positive experiences to reassure them.

Together, let's make dental visits a breeze and keep those smiles sparkling!
