News/Media Alliance Joins Thousands of Creatives Rejecting Unlicensed Training of Generative AI Models - News/Media Alliance 10/22/2024

Today the News/Media Alliance, along with other 10,500 signatories, signed the Statement on AI Training that rejects unlicensed training of generative AI models on creative work. It is a critical time for creators and publishers around the world with multiple ongoing lawsuits in the United States and international governments debating copyright protections that protect artists, musicians, actors, authors, content creators, and distributors.

“When something is copyright protected, it’s because it has value—and that value is present throughout the creation, distribution, and wider public engagement timeline. Intellectual work needs to be protected all along this process and generative AI does not get a free pass to exploit creators and undermine the industries that support them,” said Danielle Coffey, President and CEO of the News/Media Alliance.

"The foundation of Google’s monopoly is access to information," said Danielle Coffey, president and CEO of the News/Media Alliance, a group representing 2,200 publishers in the U.S. "The fuel to that engine is the content. Google has unfettered access to all the content with monopoly terms."

Statement: News/Media Alliance Applauds Department of Justice Remedies in Landmark Google Antitrust Lawsuit - News/Media Alliance 10/09/2024

The Department of Justice (DOJ) submitted its proposed remedies framework to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in connection to the historic antitrust lawsuit against Google for its anticompetitive practices in U.S. general search services and U.S. general search text advertising, including against news media companies. This first submission by DOJ of a high-level remedies framework kicks off the new remedies phase of this litigation, which will continue through a hearing set for April 2025.

Danielle Coffey, Alliance President & CEO, stated, “These remedies will go a long way towards addressing the broken marketplace created by Google’s monopoly practice of leveraging existing market power in search to extract unfair terms from content creators throughout its walled garden. Its anticompetitive behavior is unacceptable and unlawful, and Google must be held accountable.”

"But real journalism by real journalists — not some artificial intelligence tool that scrapes the web for content, which is not always reliable — costs real money. Real local journalism involves the hard work of gathering facts. It shows evidence of first-hand reporting — independent research, interviews and fieldwork — and editing. The light rewriting, reproduction or aggregation of news from external sources is not original journalism, nor is simply cutting and pasting news releases or loading up a website with articles from a wire service or with a carousel of clickbait." - Paul Deegan via
