Did you know? 🍪 Weight gain around this time of year may not only be due to comforting fall foods like pumpkin pie and cider, researchers have found that lack of vitamin D reduces fat breakdown and triggers fat storage.

Cat teeth function to tear bite-size pieces away and swallow whole rather than to chew! This is why dry cat food is in specific shapes and sizes- so it does not cause choking! 🐈 Did you know?

🐋 This one was a bit of a trick question- though most whales do not have teeth, baleen whales have 270-395 rows of baleen, or whale bone, which is made of the same material as your fingernails- keratin. Baleen are organized in many rows of thin plates with hair like structure at the tip. These "teeth" are used to filter out small fish and animals from the water that whales catch in their mouths.
For an additional fun fact: Keratin rich foods include; salmon, eggs, kale, carrots, onion, garlic, sweet potatoes, and mangoes!

🐮 Did you know? 🐮
🐄 Cows spend an average of 6 hours eating, and another 8 hours chewing their cud! Another fun fact is that cows don't have upper incisors (though they do have upper and lower molars). Instead of teeth, they have a hard mound called a dental pad that helps them "chew." All of this so they can maintain their 1,400 lb figure!

A narwhal's tusk is a 10 foot tooth made of ivory! Female narwhals almost never have a tusk, and most males have one. The tooth is spiral and grows through their upper lip. The tusk has millions of nerve endings and is used to "feel" and "taste" their surroundings.

This may seem like like a trick question when you think about elephant tusks (which are actually teeth!) that can grow between 5 and 8 feet long, but elephant tusks are incisors! Hippo canine teeth can grow between 1.2 and 1.5 feet long, the longest canines of any animal!

Snails actually have the most teeth of any animal! Snails teeth are not like regular teeth. A snail’s teeth are arranged in rows on its tongue. A garden snail has about 14,000 teeth while other species can have over 20,000. But that’s not even the most shocking part: The teeth of an aquatic snail called the limpet are the strongest known biological material on Earth, even stronger than titanium!

Having poor oral health puts a person at risk for heart disease. If the gums are inflamed due to the bacteria that causes periodontal disease, that same bacteria can actually get into the bloodstream causing the arteries to build up plaque and harden.

🐊 Crocodiles have a pretty complex oral hygiene routine! Not only do they bleach their teeth in the sun, wash their teeth in water as they swim, but they also allow birds to clean food scraps stuck between teeth! Well that, and crocs can replace their old teeth with new ones over the entire course of their life! Now, can anyone tell us the difference between a crocodile and an alligator? 👀

Do sharks get cavities 🦈🦷? The answer is- no! Sharks have a coating of fluoride on the outer layer of their teeth, preventing them from cavity-causing decay. Their teeth also contain other material that makes them especially suited for their underwater environment. All of this, and many sharks are able to replace lost teeth quickly, in a matter of days or weeks. Lucky them.. their teeth are a big part of their job description!

Amalgam is commonly referred to as "silver fillings," or "silver caps." Amalgam is a mixture of metals including mercury, silver, tin, copper, and other metals. The first recorded use of amalgam as a tooth filling was in China in 700 B.C.. The more common filling today is composite, or the "white filling," which was first used in the 1960's.

Did you know? 👀🍀
While people in Ireland had celebrated St. Patrick since the 1600s, the tradition of a St. Patrick’s Day parade began in America and actually predates the founding of the United States. Records show that a St. Patrick’s Day parade was held on March 17, 1601 in a Spanish colony in what is now St. Augustine, Florida.

We hope everyone is having a great day, and is enjoying their week so far (can you believe we're already in March??? 😱). Join our story every Tuesday for our question of the week, and follow our Facebook and Instagram pages for the answer every Wednesday!

Did you know? I know we have all heard that "the tongue is the strongest muscle in the body" but this is false! There are many muscles stronger than the tongue such as the quadriceps, your jaw muscles, and your heart! The tongue is actually not even a single muscle, but a group of muscles that act in similar way in order to function in the same way, and as we learned a couple weeks ago, the tongue is the only voluntary muscle that can act independently from the skeletal system. These things may contribute to the myth that it is the strongest muscle. Though it isn't, because it is a group of muscles rather than a single muscle, the tongue does not fatigue (think about the last time your tongue was actually tired 👅). This is extremely unique because no matter how much you work out your tongue (aka no matter how much you talk or eat 😋) your tongue does not get tired like the rest of your muscles do when you work them out!
Isn't that interesting?

Wow! That is long enough to wrap around the Earth over 2 times!!! These vessels provide nutrients and oxygen to your organs, keeping them healthy. Blood takes about 45 seconds to a minute to travel from your heart, around your body, and back to your heart. In that minute, about 1.5 gallons of blood is pumped, and over the course of the day, this adds up to about 2,000 gallons. And to wrap up our post-Valentines day Trivia Tuesday, this fun fact: it was once believed that the heart was the center of memory in humans.
