📣 Exciting News from Beanstack! 📚✨ The latest addition to our reading integrity suite has arrived. The Take a Closer Look system flags entries that could indicate dishonest logging, so you can quickly identify and address issues.
Here at Beanstack, we take a creative approach to accountability, one that doesn’t use quizzes or require extensive review or grading by educators. Read more about the full Reading Integrity Suite here 👉 https://bit.ly/4gnGuJk

What’s your Slack name vs. your real name? Let’s spill the tea! ☕️ Meet the team behind the screen names.
This week, I am delighted to welcome Ari Tison to The Reading Culture! A debut author, Ari has gained critical acclaim for her novel, “Saints of the Household,” which earned accolades such as the Walter Award, the Walden Award, and the Pura Belpré Award. She’s also an accomplished poet, using her craft to delve into deep themes of identity, healing, and self-discovery. Above all, she is a masterful storyteller.
In Ari's native Bribri culture, monsters play an important role in stories, but for Ari, the monsters were also present in her real life. Through reading and writing poetry, Ari discovered an emotional outlet and ultimately her calling. In this episode, Ari shares how art connects her to her ancestral Bribri heritage. She talks about healing at her own pace, spirituality, the poets and kidlit authors who shaped her writing, growing up between multiple (seemingly very different) places and cultures, and much more.
You may have noticed most of the authors on the show have already written many books. But when I read "Saints of the Household," I knew I had to talk with Ari! She is a force, and I loved learning more about her own story.

No wonder why kids complain about reading because, seriously, who wants to take a quiz after finishing every book they read? We know we don't 🙅♀️
In her writing, author A.S. King (Amy Sarig) draws on weirdness and absurdity to tap deeper into the trauma her characters face. From anger to misplaced guilt, sadness to grief, and a general sense of overwhelming anxiety, teens have so much to process. And nothing peeves Amy like adults’ dismissal of these experiences, of this trauma, for teens. She is passionate about challenging that norm, validating teens, and offering a surreal mirror to help them understand the world as it truly is: weird.

Our Story
When we read the book All the World with our then two year-old son and soon to-be big brother, he pointed to the pictures saying “that’s me” and “that’s little sister.” The experience was a unique one for us at a time when we were searching for our next chapter. It led us then to start a book of the month business, called Zoobean, whereby each family would receive a handpicked picture book based on non-traditional genres and interests like having an in*******al family.
Just a few weeks after starting Zoobean, we appeared on the television show Shark Tank and gained an investment from Mark Cuban. But the night the show aired was a turning point when we realized that our original business wouldn’t work. At the time, our most trusted “curators” were children's and school librarians. So, we turned to them to figure out a way to better be of service.
Sacramento Public Library, led by director Rivkah Sass, became our first client for a new application of our technology, called Beanstack, that would apply our system for curating children’s books in order to deliver personalized recommendations to library patrons. Later, Montgomery County Public Library and virtual services librarian Mary Ellen Icaza asked us to tailor Beanstack to serve as the library’s summer reading platform. And Menasha Joint School District, with district librarian Jennifer Peterson, used Beanstack as a platform for an innovative district-wide “Get In The Game” reading challenge. These experiences and the opportunities afforded by these remarkable partners, helped us achieve our purpose – to deliver a uniquely useful and personal experience for readers of all ages.
Over the last four years, we have focused intently on making Beanstack the single best tool for facilitating reading programs, primarily in libraries and schools. Our personalized recommendation system remains part of our secret sauce and how we got started. But more than that, the three values represented in our logo – love, inclusion, and awesomeness – are at the “heart” of all we do. This is who we are and there’s so much more to come. Thank you for your time and consideration!
