Catfish, or “mudfish” as they are called in the south, are sometimes caught with the fisherman’s bare hands! This sport is called “Catfish Noodling” and we recreated the experience with some of our most adventurous residents and seasoned fishermen. No living catfish were harmed on our day of noodling….but the fish we caught keeps growing along with the size of our story!

97-Year-Old Rekindles Her Lifelong Love of Horses Ninety-seven year old Betty Miller, a resident of Waltonwood Senior Living Community in Ashburn got the chance to relive a little bit of her childhood with three generations of her
The life enrichment and resident care teams at Waltonwood Ashburn assembled an Adventure by Waltowood like no other and made a horse-lover’s dream come true. 97 year old resident, Betty, has a love and passion for farms and horses. She had a pony when she was little given to her by her father and has loved them ever since. She walks around Waltonwood telling everyone stories about her and horses and how much she loves them, and they love her!
Life Enrichment Manager, Rachel Reed, decided there was an opportunity to give Betty her perfect day. Accompanied by her daughter and grandchildren, Waltonwood set up a visit to the Loudoun Therapeutic Riding Center in Lovettsville, VA. It was there Betty was able to tour the premise, enjoy a carriage ride by Viva, a competition horse, used a MiraColt Simulator to practice riding and test her agility and then lastly rode Teddy, an American Standard Pony. Betty was a natural with the horses and it was an amazing experience for this lifelong horse lover, her family and our Waltonwood team!
Today, Waltonwood residents enjoyed art class with Juliet. Getting in touch with their inner Van Gogh, while having creative fun!

It’s been a very busy week at Waltonowwd Ashburn! We kicked off the week with a Super Bowl Party on Sunday. After a tense game leading to overtime, the Chiefs finally prevailed over the 49ers. On Tuesday, we dressed in purple, gold & green and enjoyed a concert by Quentin Walston while noshing on king cake. On Wednesday, we celebrated Valentine’s Day with a concert by Accidental Red while eating delectable chocolate bundt cupcakes with pink icing and a cherry on top. As always, we’ll finish the week with Happy Hour on Friday.
To prepare for the beginning of Lunar New Year, Raymond Wong brought his traditional drummers and lion dancers to Waltonwood Ashburn. Mimicking a lion’s movements while in costume is thought to bring good luck and fortune!
When Trang, the owner of White Summer Flowers & Décor greeted Waltonwood residents during an outing on January 12th, she told us that their shop was expecting a visit from some very special guests that day. “Who are you expecting?” we asked. “You!” she replied. Our residents marveled at the in-shop silk floral installation and enjoyed a large-vase arranging tutorial hosted by the world’s sweetest designer, Afy. The staff could not have been kinder, providing seating and fresh water during our visit. Afy brought special stems out for us to touch and feel as she arranged. They told us flower secrets: about listening to the flowers and about the “magic” potions used to improve the longevity of fresh cut stems. Our residents felt so proud and special, carrying home big bouquets of florals that were specially designed to each of their liking. Thank you to our new friends at White Summer. We had such an amazing and special visit!
The wonderful students and teachers of Dominion Trail Elementary honored our favorite music teacher, Erma Knust, with a serenade this holiday! Erma’s very own 2nd grade music teacher, Donald Gardener, composed the American classic “All I Want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth.” Released by RCA in 1948, it was in Erma’s very own grade school classroom that the song was conceived, inspired by the likes of Erma’s cousin, who sat in the front row and was missing a few of her own teeth. The children of Dominion trail brought this memory back to life as the entire school sang the chorus in Erma’s honor and then met her in procession through their gymnasium floor.
Erma’s Adventure began with an interview with Gerontological Social Worker and Radio Host Rob Bamberger, who gently guided Erma through some of her era’s unique and familiar renditions of her favorite classics. Her time with Rob was capsulated in the recognition by both interviewer and guest, that music, even the very instrument we play, becomes a part of us.
Waltonwood Family VIPs gathered this month for a meet and greet with our new Wellness Coordinator, Sheryl Warren-Graham! It was an evening celestial painting led by Juliet’s Paintings, where family members decorated a starry sky in the spirit of their loved one’s personality, energy or talents. Chef Lalo made the evening extra special with warm hors d’ouvres. It was truly wonderful to have this gentle time together.
Stagecoach Theatre Company presented “Heart of the Mummy,” a murder mystery luncheon performed at Waltonwood. The cast included actors from Stagecoach and 6 residents who volunteered to play conniving characters. The show, performers and food were fabulous! A great way to start off all of our Halloween festivities.
The residents hosted an Art & Craft Show on Sat, 10/21 to help raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. Our goal was $2,023. We raised $3,884! Go Team Waltonwood.
Waltonwood residents, staff and family took a tractor tour of the pumpkin and sunflower fields at Loudoun County's Temple Hill Farm this week! We learned how new sunflowers grow toward the sun and then face east as they fade. Each resident picked their own pumpkin and we cut all the fresh sunflowers that arms could carry!
Wanna have the power to help someone smile? Wear a fake mustache! Patch Adams knew it and retired hospice nurse Ellen Rooney knows it too. Here she has changed the mood of an entire room with this tiny adornment on her upper lip. We imagine this is a skill that she perfected, through many years of working with patients in her care. Hospice, she recalls, “is not about treating just the patient. You are really there to support the whole family.” Maybe that is why she is always first to volunteer trying new things, putting on a silly costume, or leading a prayer circle for someone who is grieving. She comforts and cheers the room whenever and with whatever means are available. Often that encouragement manifests verbally: “you matter” and “you are wonderful.” And if Ellen “mustache” you a question, you will soon understand that you have been laugh-bombed. Ellen is aging actively, aging hilariously, and aging with full heart-forward!
