Reading aloud with children can create strong bonds with loved ones and helps your child develop and learn. A child with hearing loss might not be able to hear or understand some of the words in a story, or tell you the names of things on the page. But your child will enjoy cuddling with you and sharing a colorful and interesting book. Over time, reading aloud can also strengthen speech and language skills by making reading fun. It’s a way to give your child a gift that will last a lifetime—a love of books. ⁣

If your child has hearing loss and you find reading together challenging, consider implementing these tips during your next reading session: ⁣

1. Turning pages, touching the pictures, and reading books with flaps will give your child proactive using their hands, which gets your child ready to learn sign language. ⁣

2. Read together at a time of day when reading can be fun and relaxing.⁣

3. Learn and use simple sign language as you read. ⁣

4. Read the same story many times. This can help your child learn words that may have been missed before. Explain the story if you need to.⁣

5. Make sure your child can see your face and the pictures. This will make it easier to follow the story, even if the child doesn’t catch all the words ⁣

Eating fruits and vegetables is one of the most positive health habits adults and children can have. People who eat more fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy diet have reduced risks of chronic diseases, including stroke, type 2 diabetes, some forms of cancer and heart disease. Eating plenty of produce is a great way to eat smart while adding color, taste and variety to our diets. Start encouraging your child early to choose more fruits and vegetables with these nine tips: ⁣

🍓 Keep a bowl of fruit on the counter⁣
🧉 Make fruit smoothies for a quick breakfast or snack⁣
🥔 Top baked potatoes with salsa⁣
🥕 Keep baby carrots or other ready-to-eat veggies on hand ⁣
🌽 Add corn, carrots, peas, sweet potatoes, or beans to soups and stews⁣
🥪 Top sandwiches with lettuce, tomato, and other vegetables ⁣
🍌 Add bananas to cereal or yogurt⁣
🫑 Add peppers, onions, or other vegetables to spaghetti sauce⁣
🧑‍🍳 Make a stir-fry; experiment with different vegetables or use what you have on hand ⁣

We all want our children to feel safe and secure. Reading can be a touchpoint even in periods of stress, like when there is a perceived threat of danger or when they are practicing physical distancing and must remain in their homes. Children still look to their parents and caregivers to help them feel loved and protected. Reading aloud to your child is one way to help your family through this difficult time. ⁣

Review these milestones for children aged 12 to 24 months. To be able to identify a reading problem in their child, parents need to have a sense of the milestones of early literacy. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s literacy development, talk with your child’s doctor, teacher, or a speech and language specialist. If you have a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), reading can help in situations where the child does not like certain textures and activities or has trouble getting along with other kids. Over time, reading aloud can also strengthen speech and language skills. If you find reading with your child challenging, consider trying these tips during your next reading session together:⁣

1. Read together when your child is relaxed and paying attention, such as before bedtime.⁣

2. Read books that have photos and drawings of faces. These can help your child recognize feelings.⁣

3. Read the same story many times. Children enjoy the repetition and it helps them learn language.⁣

4. Point to pictures and talk about them. “Look at the silly monkey!: You can also ask your child to point at certain things. “Where is the cat?”⁣

5. Find books that repeat words many times. Books with thymes are also good.⁣

6. Softly clap your hands and help your child clap along to the rhythm of the words.⁣

7. Try books with buttons that make a sound when pushed. Many children with ASD enjoy these.⁣

Approximately 50,000 children less than 5 years of age are brought to emergency departments each year because of unsupervised ingestions. Nearly 70% of emergency department visits for unsupervised medication ingestions by young children involve 1 and 2-year-olds.⁣

Follow these tips to ensure that your medications are stored safely away from children at all times.⁣

Active reading involves reading a book with a child rather than reading a book to a child. Active reading is effective for children between six months through sixth grade. For the younger children you’ll want to focus more on the pictures. In active reading, an adult shares a picture book with a child and provides the child with multiple opportunities to talk about and engage with the pictures, words and ideas in the book. Your role is to be an active listener, ask questions, and get the child talking and thinking about the book. This evidence-based approach improves children’s language skills, vocabulary, and their ability to understand what they read on their own. Try active reading with your child today!⁣

Connections between math and children’s worlds, connections between math and other content areas, and connections between math content areas can all ensure that children have a better understanding and more positive feelings about math. During play, provide opportunities for your child to make connections between math content and what the child already knows about the world around them.⁣

Here are some examples of connections during play and what you, as a caregiver, can do to support it.⁣

Know before you go! Swim diapers and swim pants may help hold in solid p**p (not diarrhea), but they are not a substitute for frequent diaper changing and bathroom breaks. Swim diapers do not keep germs that can be spread in diarrhea from contaminating the water. Swim diapers and swim pants should be checked and changed frequently, away from the poolside.⁣

Reading aloud with children can create strong bonds with loved ones and helps your child develop and learn. A child with Short Attention, High Activity Level, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may be very active or have trouble following directions, waiting, or taking turns. But your child will enjoy cuddling with you and sharing a colorful or interesting book, even for a short time. Over time, reading aloud can help motor skills, speech and language development, and play. ⁣

If your child has ADHD, reading with your child for longer periods of time can be difficult. Consider implementing these 5 tips into your next reading session: ⁣
1. Sing along while reading the book. ⁣

2. Talk about the pictures and read the story. Help your child point to objects in the book. Ask questions about the story to hold your child’s interest.⁣

3. Break up reading with play.⁣

4. Continue to read for a few more minuets even if your child starts doing something else. A child may still be listening to the story even while playing. ⁣

5. Read before naps and bedtime to help them settle down.⁣
