Rebecca Zweibel’s pieces serve as canvasses for her use of line, color, and texture. She works instinctively and thoughtfully, with no preplanned design in mind. Each ceramic form is made individually; she sketches and redraws different forms directly onto the clay surface until she is satisfied that she will like what will be built from the slab of clay—even then, she often alters the piece as she goes. Her designs are unrestrained and unmeditated, conveying unprocessed emotions of freedom and abandonment.
Zweibel constructs each piece one at a time; none are like any other. Her vessels are slab built from earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. Zweibel’s forms are decorated with varying combinations of terra sigillata, slip, and underglaze. Diverse tools and found objects are used to create unique textures on her pieces, along with a traditional carving technique called sgraffito. Her pieces are fired in an electric kiln, rendering the designs indelible.

Ayla Mullen is a featured artist in our 5th annual Vessels of Merriment exhibition, on view now through December 31.
Born and raised on a small farm in the Pacific Northwest, Ayla Mullen has been enamored with clay since the mud-pie bakery days of her childhood. After graduating with a degree in ceramics from Marlboro College in Vermont, Ayla moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains to pursue an apprenticeship with potter Ellen Shankin and learn the rhythms of life as a studio potter.
After five years in Virginia, she followed the call of her home mountains and headed back west, thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail on her way to western Washington state. She is now settled in the town of Bellingham, her home and studio tucked between the mountains and the bay, and when she can get away from pottery, you will find her running, hiking, reading, and having kitchen dance parties with her cat.

Based on a design by Dard Hunter, this jaunty little nutcracker tile will make a festive addition to your holiday décor. Each tile is made by hand in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and can be hung on the wall, displayed on a stand, or used as a striking accent in your next tile installation.
William Joseph “Dard” Hunter (1883-1966) was primarily devoted to the study of papermaking. His designs for the Roycroft community in East Aurora, New York, helped define the Arts & Crafts movement in America. His designs have been an ongoing inspiration to Motawi Tileworks.
