M R Gardens
Healthy Plants, Healthy Landscapes Our small, neighborhood nursery primarily focuses on native flowers and complementary plants.
We offer species that benefit the ecosystem, as well as plants that encourage homeowners to participate in their landscape. It's best to order plants at our online store nativeplantsasheville.com, and we'll arrange a pickup date that's convenient for you. Or you can visit us during one of our open houses. Check plant show dates at mrgardens.net. We hold tours of our one-of-a-kind passive solar gre
More exciting news! Laurel's Garden Design in Raleigh is hosting an event to benefit two mountain nurseries impacted by the hurricane—M R Gardens and Tanager Plants! Please pass this along to gardeners in the Triangle area. In addition to plants, locally made pottery is available at the show, and all sales go to the nurseries 🧡
Many thanks to Emily of Tanager for delivering the plants, Laurel for hosting, and the others involved to make this happen!

We found a delightful combination in our gardens this summer: Purple-Headed Sneezeweed paired with Rattlesnake Master. This photo was taken toward the end of August, but the two put on quite a show throughout the summer.
We still have a few Purple-Headed Sneezeweeds remaining, and many Rattlesnake Master. Order yours at nativeplantsasheville.com, or visit us during our open house starting tomorrow at 3:00. 💛
See you there! 💚
Find out about our upcoming plant show in our latest newsletter! We also have a looong list of thank you's. The list is by no means exhaustive ❤️ Our community—whether it's here and many miles away—is incredible.

Plant show in Durham this evening and tomorrow morning! Get details at: https://www.plantsforwildlifewnc.com/locations/hurricane-helene-relief
Heading to Durham shortly! Plants can stay beautiful a tad longer in warmer temps there. As always, many thanks to our plant lovers and colleagues there, helping us get through all the changes and turbulation💙
Big news! Preston Montague in Durham is hosting a plant show this Friday evening and Saturday morning featuring M R Gardens plants! Find out more, and keep up-to-date on the latest on how the Piedmont is helping us through this trying time, at https://www.plantsforwildlifewnc.com/locations/hurricane-helene-relief
Thanks again Rachel’s Native Plants for visiting us from Pittsboro! She traveled back with a truckload of plants for her landscape projects and nursery sales, as well as for M R Gardens pre-orders from Winston-Salem, Burlington and the Triangle area.
It’s hard to believe it was only a week ago - we contacted Izel Native Plants because we saw 80 degree temps in the forecast and we still did not have water. We knew the plants would start drying out fast and we needed to find homes for them quickly. Shannon with Izel sent out a mass email to nursery owners and horticultural support systems in the Piedmont, and Rachel was one of many who responded with ideas and offers to help.
Of course the plant sales have been extremely helpful, and also - It’s been really great to keep on working - connecting with fellow plant people and business owners - and feeling like we are continuing to move forward in a positive direction in spite of everything. Plus, people out East have been delighted to buy plants and help out a business in the mountains after watching horrific photos on the news. It’s very much a mutually positive exchange.
Water is running through our taps right now, but we understand it still could shut off at anytime — so it’s still best if we continue to sell plants. Stay tuned for announcements, and in the meantime keep ordering from nativeplantsasheville.com ❤️ There’s a good chance we’ll be going to the Piedmont as soon as the middle of next week with another truckload.

We just updated our inventory for Lance-leaf Coreopsis (C. lanceolata)! In our experience, the ones seeded in our greenhouse in summer have an excellent survival rate over winter - They very well may stay green for quite awhile, and also be some of the first to flower in spring. 💛
Taking orders from Asheville and surrounding area for pickup at the nursery, as well as from the Triangle for pickup in Durham, and possibly cities in between if you contact us to make arrangements. [email protected]
Another customer favorite - Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) - is now available for order on nativeplantsasheville.com!
Cardinal Flower thrives in disturbed soil. A good description for our region right now ❤️
We are taking local orders as usual - and can arrange pickup at our farm in the Oakley neighborhood of Asheville. We also can continue taking orders from the Triangle until we’re about a week away from first frost in that area. (Just keep an eye on the 10 day forecast and see if any lows are below 35F). While native plants can handle frost, we just need to create some arbitrary deadline, although we can make exceptions for large orders ($800plus). If you are on the route between Asheville and Durham, you might check with us prior to placing your order.
Many thanks - the less mature plants we need to find water for, the more likely we’ll be able to resume propagating for next spring - so orders from the eastern part of the state help our local gardens ❤️
One of our most sought after items, Scarlet Bee Balm (Monarda didyma), is back in stock! We started these from seed this summer and they are now large enough for your yards ❤️
We are very grateful - There seems to be a fair amount of interest in the Triangle and surrounding area to help our nursery offload our inventory so that we don’t need to find water for them since Asheville City water is our main source. Lee of Radiant Bee Flora near the Duke East Campus is offering to be a hub for pickups. The truck going out this week is almost full, but we expect to arrange at least one more delivery before first fall frost in the Triangle.
We also expect to make a delivery in Winston-Salem while on the way, and we can consider other stops such as Burlington.
If you’re from these areas and would like our plants, you can go ahead and place an order at nativeplantsasheville.com. Note on the checkout page where you live and if you need the plants by a certain date.
Many thanks!❤️
Some of our items show sold out but we likely have more. We expect to be able to update inventory by this afternoon. Feel free to email [email protected] with questions. Thanks!💙
Home | M R Gardens Native flowers as well as complementary plants such as groundcovers and herbs, all grown as sustainably as possible
If anyone is in the Triangle or other cities in the Piedmont, and would like our plants, Rachel’s Native Plants can get them to Pittsboro - probably by Tuesday, but maybe Thursday. If you place an order online, put a note on the checkout page that these go with Rachel. Our online inventory may be slightly off right now, but we can sort out any discrepancies. Also if you need retail-ready plants right now, please specify. (Or alternatively pretty much all our plants can be retail-ready in 2-3 weeks if they are repotted).
We’re also looking at doing a central drop-off for all orders in the Winston-Salem area if we’re able to coordinate that in time.
A quick update on the citywater-less situation from Owner, Megan:
Cooperative Extension has set me up with a temporary watering situation — so I can definitely keep my current stock alive. That’s wonderful. And also after the relief washed over, I was then faced with looking at the bigger reality - that I don’t know if water will be turned back on by November, which is when I start seeding for the next year. My once thriving farm-stay rental is now defunct until Asheville rebounds. So needless to say, any help from other regions to keep this special, unique business going is very much appreciated. There are likely other nurseries in the same boat, so be sure to check your people.❤️

How to go about "re-opening" after a catastrophic, one-of-a kind event.... especially when everyone processes in their own unique way. It's tricky. To help, we're sharing photos of a frequent visitor at our farm—It sat for an unusually long time today as we admired it and thanked it for being here. We hope it brings you at least some small dose of peace, hope and ease.
There are a lot of ways we could spend our limited time to make sure this business stays afloat, but we've decided probably the best option is to just keep selling plants. Most of them were outside during the storm and were obviously drenched. We thought they had enough water so that we wouldn't have to worry about irrigating for the rest of the year. But we're suddenly having unusually warm temps with only a little rain in the forecast. Considering we're on city water (and we don't know when it will be restored), the saving grace for these plants might be to just get them into the ground—hopefully into your yards—saturated with water. We would love to honor all the hard work, love and care that went into producing them.
Our online store nativeplantsasheville.com is open, and cell service has been restored well enough at the farm that we can respond to orders in a timely manner. We usually set up a pickup time with you via email—and we think we can still do so depending on the strength of the signal—but be sure to include a phone number in which we can text you as that is usually the best communication method.
Many of you live close by, so we expect the gas burden won't be too much.
We're hoping that these plants give you the nurturing you need as you put back together your yards, and your neighbors' yards.
Please tell your friends—not everyone is on social media yet—and even if they can get online, they are wisely titrating the news. Plant people are usually quite sensitive.
Many blessings to you. ❤
Hope everyone is doing okay💙 Cell service has just now gotten strong enough here to use apps - and usually just in the middle of the night.
We’ve been getting lovely messages from former guests of the tiny house/farm stay on the property asking if they can help. Here’s our reply:
The tiny house held up great during the storm - guests said it only shook a couple of times!
It seems like the rest of the property/nursery made it through ok, and there’s been a lot of community support to make sure we all have what we need. Some of the long-term effects are unknown - We have only just begun to look into removing some trees that were uprooted and are hanging over the barn before they cause damage; and of course if city water isn’t restored soon, that’s a big problem for a plant nursery that continually relies on water.
Parts of the community are still in dire need right now….donations are being coordinated via emailing [email protected] (If that address isn’t correct, let us know).
Also just make sure all your friends know how we really need public support in rebuilding the city’s water infrastructure and getting more electric workers here to restore power.
Many thanks🧡
