Yes, I’ve recycled an old photo, but I’m reposting in response to a question about platform framing and balloon framing. Here is a ca. 1875 house with an addition and we see a great representation of the two framing styles at the junction. At the left we see the older balloon framing where the studs run the entire height of the house. A board set on edge called a ribbon or ledger is let into the studs which supports the floor joists. On the right we see platform framing where the studs are cut to the height of each story and topped with a plate comprising 2x4s set on their faces. Joists are then set on the plate creating a platform for the next story. The transition from balloon framing to platform framing began towards the end of the 19th century.
