Special time of year here in New England. It’s 8 o’clock at night and the sun is still shining on the trees in our backyard. In the opposite season, it would’ve been dark for three hours already

After a couple of years absence, on Monday I enjoyed attending the annual parade of runners that is the Boston Marathon. Rode my bike over to my usual viewing spot on Clinton St, about 2 miles from the start.
After the wheelchair and other disabled racers, lots of motorcycle cops, a swat team, media trucks, helicopters, & fighter jets; the elite men fly by. About 15 mins later, the elite women, at a very brisk pace which they'll keep up for 2 hours.
Then come the first group of the rank and file, about 10,000 bodies filling the road for 10 minutes. The fourth & final group of 10,000 won't cross the starting line until 1 -1/2 hours after the elites have started. A truly inspiring and fun event to see.

Missing the Boston Marathon again this year. The race had been held without fail every April since 1897. Except for last year and today. So in lieu of watching an actual race today, I spent some time putting together a few shots from my files, primarily taken as a spectator in Hopkinton.

Hopefully it will take place this fall. Might not be possible though, with all of those bodies so close together . . . .
Another weekend, another walk, another capture of receding ice and reflective water. Appropriate for the first day of spring I suppose but just two weeks ago I was ice skating at this same spot. At least the swans appear happy with the balmy temps.

Since Covid has prohibited most other activities, I've spent a lot of time walking, most often around the reservoir at Ashland State Park. Here's a collection of recent photos I've taken of my favorite motif - REFLECTIONS
These and many more photographs are available for digital download or as prints on traditional photo paper, metal or wood.

It seems many of my FB friends are posting seasonal material. In lieu of a political post, I'm going with FALL FOLIAGE. Enjoying lots of good color in Eastern Mass right now. Here's just a few pics from a couple of productive days shooting scenics this week.
Before I started freelancing in the early 1980's, I was working as a staff photographer for Fay Foto Service in Boston. For some reason that I don't recall, I was given a ticket from my boss, Mark Selig, to Game 7 of the 1981 Eastern Conference finals between the Celtics and the 76ers. I was there as a fan, not on assignment, but I did shoot these few pics from the last moments of an incredibly exciting game which the Celtics won 91 -90 in regulation.
The Celtics went on to win the championship over the Houston Rockets in six games.
The Conference series was ranked #1 greatest NBA playoff series ever by John Hollinger. You can read why here:

Yesterday, May 10th, was the 50th anniversary of Bobby Orr's famous game winning overtime goal to bring the Bruins their first Stanley Cup since 1941. He was one of my true sports hero's, skating and scoring like no other defenseman. I watched a lot of Bruins games in the early 70's and was lucky to have seen him, Phil Esposito and the big bad B's work their magic.

Another casualty of the Covid 19 pandemic - Our beloved Boston Marathon. The race has been held without fail every year since 1897. But not today. 🙁

I miss the real thing and hope it can be run this September. Might not be possible with all of those bodies so close together . . .

A Decade of Rock n Roll in Black & White.
I recently completed a project digitizing 35mm b&w negatives taken at concerts I attended from about '75 to '85 (at which point most venues started prohibiting cameras and other recording devices). This first batch has Aerosmith at Wayland High School in Nov 1973, the Jefferson Starship at the Boston Music Hall in March 1974 and the Grateful Dead at the Garden in June 1974. Will be posting more (and better quality) pics soon. In the meantime check out see the entire portfolio here: https://stock.billhorsman.com/ConcertPhotography/
