The Presumption of Innocence in Brunswick, Georgia by: Guest Blogger Lawrence Zimmerman A video shot from a cell phone captures the sickening moment of another young black man gunned down on the streets of America. Ahmaud Arbery clearly should be...
I’ve waited longer than I should to post about the tragic killing of Ahmaud Arbery. I believe in due process. I believe the State must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that an accused is guilty of a crime to fair and impartial jurors before the accused is condemned. I believe that most police officers and prosecutors are good and honorable people who do their best in often difficult situations to uphold the law.
The sad reality, though, is that I know too that a young black man was killed in Glynn County, Georgia for nothing more than being a black man running in a “white neighborhood.” I know that some leaders in that local law enforcement community, including the investigators and District Attorney, appear to have used their positions of trust to try to protect the killers, treating them as if they were above the law because of the killers’ ties to law enforcement, race, or some other untoward reason. And, sadly, I know that this won’t be the last African American man to die without cause, without provocation, for no reason other than the pigment of his skin.
I know It’s time to stand together, all people of all colors, against racism, bigotry and hatred. It’s time to stop the killing. It’s time to work for justice.

Kent Lawrence lived a life of accomplishment and service. I cherish the times I spent with him at UGA football letterman events, in his courtroom, on the sidelines of youth ballgames, at the theater during and after shows, ... Judge Lawrence left us too soon but his legacy will serve Athens, and the rest of the country through his DUI courts, well for generations to come. I pray for peace for Karlene, Kim and the family and rest for my friend. Kim Stephens

I started the day in historic Hartwell in the very functional 1970s built courthouse pictured below modifying conditions of bond for a nice gentleman. On my way out I discovered that Hart County is the only Georgia county named after a female, Nancy Hart, who contributed greatly to the war effort against the Tories.

We had a great week for our clients in Greene County this week. In A Probation Revocation/drug case, the State asked the Judge to revoke the balance of our client’s probation and send him to prison for more than 4 years. Fortunately, we were able to persuade the Judge to allow our client credit for time served with only an additional 30 days or so in the Greene County jail, a great result that he and his family were ecstatic about.
On the way back to Athens, I stopped to take a picture of the legendary Iron Horse in the middle of a beautiful field of sunflowers. Take a look at the interesting history of the Iron Horse and it’s ties to censorship of artistic expression at UGA many decades ago. Today, the Iron Horse (and hopefully artistic expression) roams freely in a beautiful pasture on land owned by UGA.

After starting the week in court in State Court and Municipal Court in Athens, I didn’t think anywhere could compare to Athens in the summertime. Then, I made an appearance in the Morgan County Superior Court. I was parked behind this lovely view in downtown Madison. What a beautiful way to start the week.
