Today is national raccoon day! Due to their adaptive behavior and diet, raccoons are able to thrive in urban areas like Atlanta. Here are some pictures that we’ve caught of raccoons on our trail cameras!

It’s the first week of fall! For a lot of wildlife, fall is when activity increases. Birds and butterflies begin to migrate, squirrels and chipmunks start storing food in preparation for winter, and deer begin their mating season. All of these reasons make fall a great season for wildlife watching!

Every year, millions of birds pass over Georgia as they start their journey south for the winter, and mid-September is when there is a peak in flyovers. During migration, millions of birds die from building collisions because of the disorienting lights. Turning lights off at night and participating in Lights Out Georgia is a way to prevent this.

This upcoming weekend is the beginning of deer season in Georgia! Starting on the 14th, archery hunting is allowed in all counties, including Cobb, Clayton, Dekalb and Fulton. During the 2023-2024 season, only 1% of all deer harvested in Georgia were from these counties! Hunting deer in urban areas is a great way to reduce human-deer conflicts. Not only did our intern, Dana, receive the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) fall research award, she ALSO received the CURO conference participation grant! These awards grant students the opportunity to participate in faculty-mentored research and then present it at a conference.

We are very proud of Dana and can’t wait to see how her research comes along! Enjoy some fun photos of her doing her research.

Happy International Dog day! These furry friends help our researchers in a lot of ways, from being there after a long day of field work to providing them with some much needed stress relief when the job gets tough.

Thank you Francisco for joining our team this summer and being a great intern!

“I really enjoyed learning how to set up trail cameras and ARUs during my internship. It was amazing to see firsthand the diversity of animals that reside so close to us while identifying the camera pictures.”

Curious about where urban coyotes go when the sun sets? After reviewing hundreds of hours of video footage from specialized camera collars, graduate students are now getting a sneak peek into what a typical night-in-the-life of an Atlanta coyote looks like. Early insights from footage show during daylight, Atlanta coyotes typically lie low in dense cover like forests or kudzu patches. Once night falls and human activity dies down, these nocturnal explorers become more active, often venturing into more developed areas of the city.

Thank you to Jim for being one of our interns this summer! During his time with us, his favorite activity was being out in the field.

“I loved getting to see real world applications of techniques I learned in school, like when we used telemetry to find dropped GPS collars.”

Coyotes are everywhere. Should you be concerned? Coyotes don't pose a big threat. Monitoring pets' outdoor time, keeping cats inside and securing your trash can help keep your family safe.

Ever wondered what life is like for Atlanta's urban coyotes? A Warnell graduate student is taking wildlife research to the next level with innovative GPS collars that capture video from a coyote’s point of view.

These videos offer a rare peek into the day-to-day lives of these creatures, revealing their family group dynamics and how they navigate an urban environment. Scientists aim to better understand urban coyote diet, daily routines, and their interactions with humans, in order to provide guidance on how to safely live with coyotes. Research is still in progress with finalized results expected in early 2025.

Check out this video montage for a glimpse into an urban coyote’s world!
