Time is a funny thing — it plays by its own rules. Anticipation, excitement, dread, and fear, they’ll speed you up or slow you down and try as you might, there’s nothing you can really do about it. You can wait in a line and watch each and every second pass by like the drip of a faucet in a quiet room or go to a concert that you never want to end and feel the hours slip out of your grasp like a fistful of sand. Time doesn’t care, it just does its own thing.

Feeling rather existential about this whole “time” thing, I asked my mom if she felt like her life had gone by fast, “Oh yeah! In the blink of an eye!” I was afraid of that.

I’ve spent most of my life wishing time would just get on with it. I always wanted to see what was around the next corner or behind the next door, and whether it came from a dissatisfaction of where I was and had been or if it came from a fascination of all the places I could go, it propelled me and affected almost every single decision I made. And then came a little blue trailer in the middle of an empty field and — after that — a hotdog shaped building perched on the side of a hill.

This past year at West Broad has been one of the best (and fastest) years of my life. An empty lot that’s empty no more + a building full of my favorite people I never knew existed, this year has left me speechless. I’m so very grateful — to my very core — for the cafe racer team + every single person that has ever driven out to or through any iteration of Cafe Racer. I’m holding on tight to the seconds and the minutes these days + trying to soak it all before it becomes a picture on my wall or a story I tell around the fireplace.

To celebrate this passage of time and everything it entails, we’re throwing it back to some OG Racer vibes. All week long we’ll have $5 discontinued + classic biskies in the morning and $5 birria tacos at night. 💛🪦 RIP SWEET DEE [post 2/2] 🪦💛

From the moment Sweet Dee arrived — cloaked in shredded cardboard and packing tape — I knew we were going to get along great. Whenever I was feeling stressed under the great weight of life, all I had to do was flip that switch and Sweet Dee took care of the rest. Have you ever cried under a wacky inflatable tube person? Yeah, me neither. What I didn’t know at the time was how much of an impact Sweet Dee was going to have moving forward. Whether it was a small child laughing hysterically as Sweet Dee knelt down in the wind and draped herself over them, a college kid jumping out of a car in the drive-thru while their friends filmed them doing their best impression, or a disgruntled customer passionately complaining about how she was so loud she was running the experience, Sweet Dee made her mark.

When I heard that she finally moved on from this flesh bound world to what could only be an eternal position adorning the pearly gates of heaven, I asked the staff to send me their favorite pictures of Sweet Dee so that I could share them with everyone. Here they are, a symposium of Sweet Dee, reaching back into 2020, and culminating in a bright light that faded out just a few days ago.

Goodbye Sweet Dee ❤️ Thank you for your unwavering joy and kindness. In a world of uncertainty, Sweet Dee danced into the sunset ✨

💛🪦 RIP SWEET DEE 🪦💛 [post 1/2]

I met (purchased) Sweet Dee in May 2020. Things weren’t exactly going great out there. The restaurant was closed due to Covid, and with what might possibly have been my last 400 dollars, I made the incredibly emotional + totally sober decision to buy a wacky inflatable flailing arm tube person. You see, one of my favorite parts of the business has always been its ability to provide me with the opportunity to operate exciting pieces of restaurant equipment + other stuff too that I — otherwise — would never have the chance to own. Espresso machine, got it. Sandwich press? You know it. 4ft tall immersion blender? Check ✅ I can’t exactly remember what I was thinking when I pressed purchase, but I like to think that in that moment of great uncertainty, fear, doubt, and with my last red cent, I reached out into the void towards hope and joy — a 20ft Inflatable Tube Man Yellow © I’ve been eyeballing since I was a little kid with my face pressed against the back window of my navy blue Nissan Quest.

Many are saying that 🍋🍓 strawberry lemonade 🍓🍋 is the drink of the summer and great news !! We’ve whipped up a fresh strawberry syrup that goes great with our lemonade and when you mix ‘em together, you’ve got a strawberry lemonade you can crush on our patio in the 🔥 hot hot 🔥 weather 6 days per week, 13 hours per day ☀️
