Pylon
Now rock and roll now. Roommates Randy Bewley and Michael Lachowski began the band as an art project in Fall 1978. The music began to fall quickly in place.

Though initially only together from 1979-1983, the fiercely independent Pylon have exerted an impact on their hometown of Athens, Georgia, as well as on the American music underground. They were an important connection between the local party scene and the art school scene at the University of Georgia where they first met. By a stroke of luck, their landlord who leased them studio space l

I started a tradition 2012 when I posted a quickly written piece about my December 31, 1979 adventure in music with some folks I adore. I say "tradition" because I've often reposted it, unedited, warts and all, each New Year's Eve. Here it is again, slightly edited simply because it was originally written in OpenOffice and I needed it in Pages :> And Avian's name is probably misspelled, but I'm okay with that for now.
---- December 31, 1979 (very lightly edited and brought up to date) ----
Forty four years ago tonight - December 31, 1979 - My friends and I were at the Fox Theater's Egyptian Ballroom for a concert featuring The BASICS and PYLON. Pylon was still young, experimenting with sonic mayhem and television sets that pulsed to the music. Randy, Pylon’s guitarist, was creating new sounds I'd never heard before and breaking musical stereotypes with each note. We rang in the New Year as did a group of leather-clad men who partied to their own music in one of the adjacent private rooms. I saw very few women at their party, but the men were covered in sweat, dancing happily among themselves. My friends and I were interested in the girls/women at our party, but they might as well have been statues, except for Avian – front woman for The BASICS – who was dressed geisha-style and weaved in and out among the party goers. She smiled and thanked us for coming to the show; Jimmy told us to be careful going home. I’m sure I was the designated driver, and we tried always to be careful, even in 1979.
PYLON was the headliner and just starting their rise to fame. They were the “wunderkinds” everyone went to see. We saw The BASICS because we ALWAYS went to their shows – one of the perks of being with WRFG back then. But PYLON was the core of the concert, and it was a magic night and a great capstone to 1979, a year that needed to be capped and stoned. Even so, I'd go back to December 31, 1979, and I'd stand in the same place I did at the show, at the feet of Randy Bewley. And I'd watch him play, and I'd take notes. And I'd laugh with him like we did a few months before he died. After an amazing Pylon concert at the Melting Point in Athens, as Randy and I were looking at some of the old PYLON band shots they'd used in their CD, he smiled and said, “Who were those kids?”
“Who were those kids?” Those kids were PYLON. And those kids were amazing. Godspeed, Randy.

43 years ago today…Record release party for ‘Gyrate’ before opening for Gang of Four and playing with Mission of Burma at The Channel in Boston, MA. The Channel was a 1700 capacity venue with monster speakers. This venue was in business from 1980-1991. The Channel has long since been torn down.
It was quite an evening and quite a lineup.

The ‘Blank Generation’ compilation on Cherry Red Records comes out November 17th. Pretty amazing list of bands and songs from the 1975-81 era. We see quite a few of our friends on this compilation. Take a look and you will see what we mean. There are definitely a few important bands missing, but things like contracts sometimes get in the way of releases like this this. You cannot fault Cherry Red for this massive and well done undertaking. Thanks for the heads up Swimming Pool Qs.
