Check out this message from our fearless leader, CEO, Josh Bray! #GodIsGood #ComeAndSee

The fact is that when we bring things we assume people on the streets need, most of those things in the bag end up garbage - or causes real harm. But what happens when we know the person/people and their needs as an individual? What happens when we build a relationship first? (The thing that is most needed.) More simply put, what happens to the seeds we have to offer when we plow the “concrete” first by learning names, stories, and situations? When we listen to people and know them - then we can love. And when we love, then God can use us in ways unimaginable. Volunteer Liaison, Kennedy, does not take her calling to love our friends lightly. And neither do they! We can show you how to help. Really. #ComeAndSeeWhatGodIsDoing

Meet James.

We at SHO understand that life happens. We understand that, rarely, a volunteer group has to cancel their faithful night of service for reasons beyond their control. Last week, we had a night like that. In cases like this, our Team knows what they are doing and jump into action to have enough good, hot food to feed 200 people! When volunteer, Ms. Barbara, saw that there was no one to share a word of hope and encouragement with our friends this night, she asked if we had anyone to share anything. “Not tonight” was the reply. A few minutes later, Ms. Barbara was on the stage taking that responsibility on herself!! A few weeks ago, a friend who has been coming to SHO for years came in for a meal and the volunteer that night asked if he could share a word. The volunteer talked with our friends about grace, mercy, and hope. After he spoke, our friend went to him to engage in conversation about those subjects, one-on-one. Our friend who received that message did not wake up the next morning. (We have lost 4 close friends already this winter.) Our hearts break in an unspeakable way when this happens because they are our friends and we wonder what more we could have done!! Some relief comes when we know things like this happen; when our friends receive MUCH more than a clamshell full of food when they come to SHO. He received much more at SHO because of the volunteer who was there to listen and share hope; He was able to get Real Food at SHO - because of the volunteer(s)! Our Team at SHO is good at what we do, but we are few. We are limited in what we can do for the hundreds of people we serve on a daily basis. Even if our staff was doubled or even tripled, we would still be limited. But what happens when that switch flips in the minds, hearts, and spirits of our volunteers? When volunteers get “bothered”, not merely by the problem of people experiencing homelessness, but real friends experiencing hopelessness? We believe this is where the real change happens! We

A mini look into the preparation it takes for our guests here at SHO. Our volunteers spend a lot of time planning and setting up to ensure they are comfortable eating and having fellowship amongst each other. Napoleon Hill stated, “One of the most important principles of success is developing the habit of going the extra mile.” It is our mission to not just meet the mark, but to exceed that. Thank you to everyone passionate about volunteering and always showing up and showing out!
