The cotton sector is at the origin of a very important part of the export earnings of the producing countries, but they transform very little their production of fiber locally. They do not sufficiently add value to the co-products of the seed. A real shortfall for the creation of added value and jobs in Africa.
With a record production of 714,000 tonnes of cotton, Benin is the leading cotton producer ahead of Mali and Burkina Faso, thus maintaining its rank as the sector leader in Africa.
With this volume the country produces 315,000 tonnes of fiber. But local fiber consumption does not exceed 3,000 tonnes per year, the equivalent of barely 1% of national production. Almost all is intended for export.
The textile industry remains the big absence in the development of local processing.
What then should Africans do to better value white gold?

Mainly grown in Africa, only a fraction of cashew production is processed on the continent, depriving it of a multitude of opportunities linked to exploding global demand.
Between 2000 and 2018, the world trade in raw cashew nuts more than doubled to reach 2.1 billion kilograms, of which nearly two-thirds of this growth is attributable to African producers, led by Côte d'Ivoire.
Yet the continent's farmers and exporters get only a fraction of the final retail price.
Cashews grow in the tropical climates of 20 West and East African countries which produce around 90% of the raw cashews traded on the world market. After Côte d'Ivoire, the main producers are Tanzania, Nigeria, Benin, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Ghana.
But less than 15% of the continent's nuts are shelled on African soil. The rest is exported mainly to Asia, where 85% of the world's cashews are shelled, adding value to the product. Together, two Asian countries, India and Viet Nam, accounted for around 98% of global raw cashew imports between 2014 and 2018.
More value is added in Europe and North America, where 60% of marketed nuts are roasted, salted, packaged and eaten as an accompaniment to appetizers or incorporated into a drink, nutrition bar or other product.
For African farmers, this is a real shortfall.
How do you think Africans can make the most of the many opportunities offered by cashews?

Africa is the birthplace of coffee and is a producer of some of the best coffee in the world with 12% of global production.
The main African coffee producing states are Ethiopia, Uganda, Ivory Coast, Madagascar, and Tanzania.
Coffee holds a large place in the economic sector. The number of consumers around the world continues to increase year by year and attract more customers.
However, the distribution of value within the production chain is unbalanced and the African continent is particularly paying a heavy price.
Indeed, the prices paid to coffee growers in African countries are lower than those in other countries, whether for Arabica or Robusta.
The share of African producers in the roasted coffee value chain is also lower than that of other regions of the world. Thus, it would be between 8.7% and 12.6%, with 12.6% for Ethiopia and 10% for Uganda, the two main exporters of the continent, against 15.7% for India and 14.9% for Brazil.
As a result, unfair trading conditions cause African coffee farmers to lose $ 1.47 billion in income per year. Losses are estimated at $ 713.1 million for Ethiopian farmers, $ 229.7 million for Ugandans, $ 22.7 million for Congolese, $ 22.4 million for Cameroonians and $ 1.4 million for Togolese.
This situation is untenable for the African producer, who produces quality coffee, but who receives the lowest prices of all producers, globally.
In your opinion, what should we do then to make African coffee more profitable in the container and in the rest of the world?

With more than 75% of world production, the African continent is the main exporter of cocoa. During the 2018/2019 season, a total of 4.8 million tonnes of cocoa was produced worldwide. Ivory Coast and Ghana are by far the two largest cocoa producers, alone accounting for over 60% of global cocoa production.
While Africa is a leader in the production of the raw material, it receives only a tiny fraction of the income generated by the chocolate industry. Indeed, producers receive only 6% of the 100 billion dollars in annual revenues of the sector. And according to the World Bank, half of Ivorian planters live below the poverty line at the rate of $ 1 per day to Ivorian producers.
How then to get a better profit from cocoa production? Should we focus more on local processing? Turn to high-end cocoa production?
Despite the weakness of the African chocolate market, several entrepreneurs, aware of the continent's potential, have launched initiatives in recent years to promote “made in Africa” chocolate. In this regard, the Ivory Coast and Ghana, the two main world producers, seem to be setting the tone.
Brands like Instant Chocolat, launched in Ivory Coast in 2014, or 57 Chocolate (which produces high-end chocolate in Ghana) already have the ambition to compete with global giants such as the Swiss Nestlé in Africa, perhaps before to export to other continents. To stand out, these new companies sometimes rely on organic products, or designs reflecting African cultures.
Let's value Africa's raw materials as it should!
