Benjamin is in his first phase of treatment. Eventually once all of his permanent teeth are fully in, he will need the second phase of treatment. Typically there is a break between the two phases!

The American Association of Orthodontist has offered five timely tips to protect braces, aligners and other orthodontic “appliances” while protecting teeth from decay!

1. Avoid sticky situations with your braces and aligners. Stay away from hard, sticky, crunchy or chewy candy and snacks. These include caramel, gummies, licorice, taffy, bubblegum (even the sugarless kind), jelly beans and soft drinks.

2. Give “no love” to hard treats – including hard-shelled peanut candies, nuts or nut-filled candies, taco chips and popcorn (especially unpopped kernels). And whether in orthodontic treatment or not, we advise that no one should ever chew ice.

3. Brush up! Sweets can cause cavities, which means brushing and flossing are more important than ever during the “love season”. Orthodontic patients should be especially vigilant about brushing and flossing after consuming sugary or starchy foods.

4. Lovely news: Not all valentines candy is off-limits. Good alternatives include soft chocolates, peanut butter cups or other melt-in-your-mouth varieties.

5. Make a commitment to oral health. Deciding to avoid hard and chewy sweets before Valentine’s Day increases your rate of success – and reduces the likelihood that you’ll break braces.

🌟UPDATE🌟

Our friend Jayde, was seen back in the office yesterday! It’s been about 10 weeks since she started her treatment. Yesterday the lower braces were placed along with some glue buildup on her back molars to prevent her upper teeth from hitting the lower brackets.

The glue buildup can be very annoying to the patients when they first get it. It does take time to get used to but once the bite settles it can feel more natural/even and eventually can be removed.

See you in another 8-10 weeks Jayde!

Dr. Brian Reising received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Indiana University School of Dentistry, graduating with High Distinction. After completing dental school, he completed his Orthodontic Residency at the Ohio State University, College of Dentistry, Department of Orthodontics, where he earned a Master of Science in Biology and Specialty Certification in Orthodontics. Dr. Reising has been practicing orthodontics for over 20 years and is a member of the American Association of Orthodontics. He is the practicing doctor for our Rome and Acworth locations! Dr. Reising has lived in the Atlanta area since 1999 and enjoys spending time with his wife and two kids.
