🎉 : Congrats to Anayancy Ramos Facio, PhD, candidate in Emory Laney Graduate School's microbiology and molecular genetics program, and her advisor Timothy Read, PhD, Infectious Diseases faculty member, for being named 2024 Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Gilliam Fellows!
This program recognizes student-adviser pairs for their outstanding research and their commitments to advancing equity and inclusion in science. Each student-adviser pair is awarded $53,000 in support each year for up to three years of the student's dissertation research.
✨ICYMI: In July, DOM's Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology and the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine hosted another successful Annual Southeast Review and Update on Medical Care of Older Adults!
This event brought together a vibrant and diverse group of healthcare professionals including primary care physicians, internal medicine and geriatric specialists, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, and hospice and palliative medicine experts. Over the one and a half days together this group discussed the multifaceted challenges faced by today’s elderly patients and how our communities can stay at the forefront of geriatric care.

Emory University and GradyHealth teams have been instrumental in testing and conducting clinical studies for the first FDA-authorized point-of-care hepatitis C (HCV) test, Xpert HCV. Their involvement began in the fall of 2023 as part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) RADx Tech test validation center.
We are proud to share that the Grady Liver Clinic teams were led under the direction of GIM faculty, Shelly-Ann Fluker, MD, FACP (L) and Lesley Miller, MD (R), and served as one of the 15 sites enrolling in the nationwide clinical trial. 🎉

🎉 : Congrats to DOM's own Monica Farley, MD (Infectious Diseases), on her recent appointment as President-Elect of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases(NFID)!
Since 1973, the NFID has led national efforts to increase awareness about infectious disease prevention and treatment. NFID is dedicated to educating and engaging the public, communities, and healthcare professionals about infectious diseases across the lifespan.
On July 8, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, announced a new pilot program, the Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience (GUIDE) Model, which aims to provide support and services to both patients and caregivers to address the challenges posed by dementia effectively.
GradyHealth was selected as one of 390 institutions to participate, and we are proud to share that DOM's own Gabriela Cohen, MD, and her Emory at Grady Geriatric team will lead the implementation of the GUIDE model at Grady.👏

🎉 : Congrats to GIM faculty member, Tracey Henry, MD, MPH, MS, who was selected by the National Academy of Medicine and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for their 2024–2025 class of RWJF Health Policy Fellows!

🌈As Pride Month comes to a close, we want to give a special shoutout to GIM faculty member, Jason Schneider, MD, for receiving Georgia Equality's Allen Thornell Political Advancement Award! Dr. Schneider is recognized for his long-term advocacy and work on behalf of LGBTQIA+ people, particularly his role in organizing and mobilizing healthcare professionals to advocate against restrictions on gender-affirming care during past legislative sessions.

🌈June is ! To celebrate this time of year, Emory University School of Medicine recently spotlighted Geriatrics and Gerontology postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Jeffrey Lentz.
Dr. Lentz is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community and has devoted his educational and research pursuits to studying this population. His interest initially sparked when he was an undergrad interning at True Colors United, a nonprofit organization that serves and supports LGBTQ+ youth. “True Colors opened my eyes and helped me discover my passion for learning about my community more deeply.”
Now, as a third-year post-doctoral fellow, his research focuses on LGBTQ+ older adults, exploring their aging process, overall health in long-term care, and their caregivers. Read his full profile ➡️ https://brnw.ch/21wKRG5

✨️We are proud to announce that incoming DOM Chair, Carlos del Rio, MD, has been elected to serve on the National Academy of Medicine Council! This will be his second four-year term as the NAM international secretary, one of three key leaders of the academy.
As international secretary, he works closely with the NAM president and governing council, and as liaison to the global academies of medicine and science.
