Their compassion and dedication help create an environment of care and comfort that makes a real difference in the lives of our patients.

“Sometimes, patients just need someone to listen, and I’m happy to be that person. It’s not just about cleaning; it’s about making people feel cared for in every way,” said Nikki Simmons, Grady EVS.

“As an EVS worker in the Emergency Department, I know my work is about more than just cleaning - it’s about safety. The fast pace of the ER means every detail matters, and I take pride in knowing that what I do helps protect both patients and staff,” said Vernon Gibbson, Grady EVS.

"In high school, the number one thing on my vision board was to be a nurse. I came here for my nursing clinical years ago, but even to this day, I'm still learning," said Sonya Daniels, Charge Nurse in our Cancer Center.

Sonya has dedicated 26 years to serving patients at Grady, and her commitment and passion for nursing continue to grow.

"We see many different patients, and things can be hectic, but it just takes that one patient who turns your day around to tell you how much your care makes a difference. Those moments are the best part of my days at Grady." 🏥 💙

“All my life, I have worked with Deaf and Hard-of-hearing people, and it is so important for everyone to have access to communication,” said Erika Bravo, American Sign Language (ASL) Medical interpreter.

As our first ASL medical interpreter at Grady, Erika is dedicated to breaking down communication barriers and ensuring our Deaf and Hard-of-hearing patients receive the best possible care. 🧏 🏥

“Now, when a Deaf patient comes in, we don’t have to call an agency and wait for someone to arrive, which can take over an hour, said Erika” “A patient can have an in-person ASL interpreter here whenever there is an emergency.”

Below, Erika shares three tips to remember when caring for deaf or head-of-hearing patients.

• Even if you use an interpreter, always speak directly to your patient.
• If you can help it, limit the number of people talking simultaneously at the patient’s bedside. This can make things challenging for a deaf person who can’t follow many conversations.
• When entering a patient’s room, flipping the lights on and off or partially opening the door and waving your hand is always preferred instead of knocking.

"Sun-sensitive rashes can happen in anyone, lighter or darker skin types," said Dr. Laura Delong Aspey, Grady's Chief of Dermatology. "It's important people, even with darker skin, are protecting their skin out in the sun."

Dr. Aspey wants to remind everyone to stay safe while enjoying the sunny weather. Here are some essential sun safety tips to keep in mind:

🧴 Wear a sunscreen that's a Sun Protected Factor (SPF) 45 or higher
☀️ If you're continuing to stay outside, reapply every two hours
👒 Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sun-protective clothing
🌂 Carry a parasol or seek shade

"Many of the rashes I see are often preventable, so I'm always encouraging my patients to be sun-smart."

"I was a victim of gun violence in 2019. Dr. Randi Smith saved my life and lifted me up. I wanted to become the hero she was to me for other victims of gun violence, said Jeffery Gates.

Jeffery has transformed his pain into purpose, serving as a Violence Intervention Specialist with Grady's IVYY.

Every day, Jeffery helps others navigate the aftermath of gun violence, offering support, hope, and a path to healing. His work changes lives and strengthens our community.

"Sometimes people are shocked that I work here. But being my authentic self allows me to connect with patients at Grady every day. This job gives me purpose. I'm proud of what I do. "

Water service at Grady has been restored and water pressure has increased significantly. We will continue to provide bottled water to patients and staff as we remain under a boil water advisory. All patient appointments, procedures, and surgeries will return to normal operations on Monday, June 3.

We are thankful for our team, who has gone above and beyond to ensure patient safety and to continue delivering exceptional care during this time. We also appreciate the City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management working to resolve this issue.
