Congratulations to Peachtree Orthopedics surgeon Dr. Anil Thomas who, last Friday, successfully performed the first Augmented Reality hip replacement in the state of Georgia. Augmented Reality (AR) is the next generation of surgical procedures using computer navigation. This advanced process uses information from the patient’s CT scan to create a 3D model, which is then projected onto the patient through special lenses worn by the surgeon. It’s akin to having 'X-ray vision' during the surgery, and allows for highly accurate, patient-specific placement of implants. Dr. Thomas also employs the Direct Superior Approach for total hip replacements surgery. This minimally invasive technique allows him to perform the surgery without cutting the important muscles of the hip. Preserving the muscles with this level of detail and precision means less trauma to the area, and ultimately less pain, a quicker recovery, and a better outcome. This patient, in fact, returned home two hours after surgery.

March has been National Athletic Training Month! In March and all through the year, we celebrate, acknowledge and appreciate all the hard work of our Peachtree Orthopedics' Athletic Trainers. You can find them in clinic, DME, and caring for high school and professional sports teams. Athletic Trainers are licensed, certified healthcare professionals, who are skilled in the emergency management, prevention, recognition, evaluation, treatment/rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries. We have the best ATCs here at Peachtree Orthopedics!

Like father, like daughter: Dr. Steve McCollam and his daughter Grace, a medical student at Tulane University School of Medicine, recently co-authored a paper published in the Journal of Hand Surgery Global Online (JHS GO) entitled “Progressive Ulnar Neuropathy due to anomalous Distal Forearm Muscle: Distal Forearm Decompression.” This prestigious journal is a peer-reviewed, international forum for the latest techniques and advances in hand and upper extremity surgery. Working on this paper was a fun and special project for proud dad Dr. McCollam.

Exciting news: we have our own MLB All-Star in the house! Dr. Tim Griffith’s recent publication in the prestigious American Journal of Sports Medicine has been named as the Major League Baseball “Research Paper of the Year.” Dr. Griffith presented his medical research at the recent MLB Winter Meetings – soon after, it was announced that he had been honored with this distinction. As the Braves’ Head Team Physician, Dr. Griffith’s leading-edge research helps MLB players recover from overuse and traumatic injuries and get back to winning. Congratulations Dr. Griffith! We’re so proud of you.

Congratulations to our very own Mary Lou Kauffman, who was recently presented with the Spirit of Nursing Award by the Mennonite College (School) of Nursing at Illinois State University. This award is presented to a graduate who has demonstrated exceptional dedication to patient care and clinical excellence, commitment to compassionate care, community service, and advocacy for the vulnerable.

Mary Lou has been with Peachtree Orthopedics since 2001, and she continues to embody the values of her alma matter in how she approaches each day and the patients she helps!

Patient Beau Barron reached his lifelong goal of becoming an Ironman athlete, and he thanked Dr. Jim Kercher for helping him get there!

"I wanted to reach out to let you guys know how my knee is doing after the MACI procedure, meniscus transplant, and TTO procedure. Since then, I accomplished my lifelong goal of completing a full Ironman (swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and run 26.2 miles). Before my surgery, I could barely run a mile. The Atlanta Braves championship rings are EPIC and, as head team physician, Dr. Tim Griffith (left), and team physician Dr. Marv Royster (right), are proud to own a piece of baseball history. Each ring contains 150 diamonds that honor the 150 years of franchise history, 44 emerald cut diamonds to celebrate Braves legend Hank Aaron, and the 18.71-karat white gold “A” pays homage to the year the Braves were founded (1871). Fun fact: Dr. Royster was a team physician for the Braves during the 1995 World Series Championship, making him the proud owner of not one, but two Championship rings!

Peachtree Orthopedics is proud to offer scholarships to assist minority high school students in greater Atlanta who plan to continue their education in college programs. Scholarships are being granted for full-time study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice. Applicants must be a minority with at least a 3.0 GPA, residing in one of the following counties: Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett, Forsyth, Clayton, Henry, Cherokee, Dawson, Douglas, Fayette, Hall, or Coweta. They must also be high school seniors or graduates, or current postsecondary undergraduates who plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited 2 or 4 year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year.
