Our Story

The Learning Tea accepts up to 12 young women per year in our center in Darjeeling, India. Since 2010, over 80 volunteers have traveled to India to help the young women perform routine maintenance and repair work on our living facility. The donations from our generous supporters have helped the Learning Tea establish and maintain a comfortable and safe housing unit in Darjeeling that includes a water-filtration system and modern bathrooms. The organization not only provides for our scholars’ housing, tuition, food, clothing, medical benefits, and other life necessities, but also music lessons, tutoring, computer classes, self defense and other extracurricular activities through the proceeds of Dr. Bombay’s, Darjeeling tea sales, used book purchases, and monthly dinners at Dr. Bombay’s in Atlanta, Georgia.

The students we work with in India are coming from an unbelievable world of extreme poverty. Most of our students are from local orphanages or have a single parent who works in the local tea gardens. Each student we take into the program has no other financial options to pursue their education.

Without further education, job prospects are slim for these girls… their future jobs would range from manual labor like carrying bricks, rolling ci******es or breaking up stone to make concrete and most of all are often sold into child labor, child trafficking, or prostitution. The Learning Tea and your generous donations are opening their futures up to better possibilities through education!
Our Dr. Bombay’s family, our local community and our loyal customers are supporting these young women through their college education. We have a 100% success rate with all of our scholars graduating college, some getting their masters and acquiring jobs in their prospective fields. Come celebrate with us.
