“‘to see you around here in the solitude’ is an exhibition of recent works that delves into the idea of lacunae.

Lacuna is a term used to label a gap, a missing part, or an unfilled space, most commonly in manuscripts. In a broader context, it also represents an absence in memory, experience, or understanding of personal and/or cultural narratives.

Drawing upon inherited materials such as family photographs, letters, memoirs, and digital documents, I use the rhetoric of painting to investigate extremes, banalities, emotions, losses, and curiosities. I both mourn and celebrate ancestors of the past, occurrences in the present, and events yet to come, blurring the lines between subjective reality, memory, and dreamscape.”

The Swan Coach House Gallery is pleased to present Antonio Darden and FRKO in ENIGGMA. The two-person exhibition features paintings, installation, and video. The show is curated by this year’s emerging Guest Curator, Anna Akpele.

The smell of Black & Milds and car exhaust flood the air vents. Sounds and sights of rattling trunks approaching redlights. Intentionally frozen in one of the less-welcoming sections of Peachtree Street, side-by-side. Patrons were six-deep in Escalades, petitioning for attention.

Cobalt, the lounge, set a pace. Its blue and violet facade reflected on the faces of its potential revelers that were often wrapped around the block. Popped collars, accompanied by a “chin strap” style beard with the occasional mink coat. Curly updos involving a microwave and roller set served as a backdrop to the atmospheric wafts of Victoria’s Secret’s “Endless Love”.

Chaos, Shadows and Fuel became complicit in an ignition of inevitable decline. Frequently deemed “off the heezy”, nights were often finished around 7 a.m. at Club 112 off Cheshire Bridge Road. This past was built upon the backs (and tongues) of the carousers that came before. The influx of drunken disorderly’s was/is nothing new.

You see…

What had happened was: Lives were lost under an international eye, spotlighting an underbelly that mo$t hoped had been picked up by the nightly street sweepers. It was the beginning of the end of a magical (dark) place full of culture and haste.

ENIGGMA is an investigation into the starlit shadowy past that further propelled Atlanta into a city divided. All while we were still too busy to notice it.

Opening Reception: Thursday, February 22, 6-9 PM

This exhibition is sponsored by the Roxxboro Foundation.

Kelly Taylor Mitchell & Sergio Suárez in Material Memory currently on view at the gallery through February 15th. The exhibition is curated by TK Smith.

Material Memory brings together two celebrated Atlanta-based artists whose practices use material as a critical form of communication. Beyond functional use, materials are filled with personal, cultural, and symbolic meanings that often trigger memory and imagination. When thoughtfully woven together, certain materials can read like language, offering supplemental, if not critical, meaning to a work of art. Kelly Taylor Mitchell is a multimedia artist whose artworks are the material result of their personal spiritual practice. She combines the materials of ritual with those from her personal and communal histories to evoke feelings of the familiar. Sergio Suárez is a multimedia artist whose work explores the mutability of material. His interests in cosmogony, translation, and transformation are made tangible through his experimental approach to art making traditions, resulting in art objects that push against the familiar. Material Memory is an exhibition that focuses on the rigorous art making processes used by the artists to create their artworks and offers a glimpse into their intimate and complex relationship with the materials that give their work meaning.
