Does your Bible mistranslate Isaiah 7:14?

Some of you may have seen Dan McClellan's recent video on the grammar of Isa 7:14. For those interested in the complexities of the verse, here's a response video that delves into the issues (discussing primarily the time when the עַלְמָה is pregnant and who is calling Jesus Emmanuel).

Why the current approach to teaching New Testament Greek *actually* doesn't work 07/08/2024

The grammar-translate method is the standard approach to teaching Biblical Greek and Hebrew. But what is its history, and how do scholars in the field of second language acquisition view it today?

Here's a response video to Biblical Mastery Academy's Darryl Burling about why GTM is not producing the results that students want.

Why the current approach to teaching New Testament Greek *actually* doesn't work The grammar-translate method is the standard approach to teaching Biblical Greek and Hebrew. But what is its history, and how do scholars in the field of sec...

"I’m thrilled to have [Biblingo] available.

I was persuaded of the need to try a different approach to teaching Hebrew after I’d seen cohorts labouring to learn the language using the more established grammar translation model, but then found only a minority managed to maintain their facility with Hebrew after graduating.

I’m only into my second year using Biblingo, so it’s early days, but some of my current students are already incorporating Hebrew into their daily devotional time and all are showing much greater confidence in the language than I would have expected. I’m easily able to use and adapt the Biblingo resources to suit my students and find that the classes are highly engaging and even fun. I’m very hopeful for the long term fruit that might be born through the use of the Biblingo resources."

"What Language Was the Bible Written In?"

You might think the answer to this question is simple: the Old Testament was written in Hebrew (and some Aramaic), and the New Testament was written in Greek.

But the simple answer is not the whole story.

Special holiday podcast episode!

Dr. Kevin Grasso takes us through four key texts surrounding Jesus' death and resurrection. We examine how the messianic prophesy of Isaiah 53:7 should be properly translated (hint: every English translation is missing something). We look at the significance of Jesus' response before the high priestly court in Matthew 26:63-65: "You have said so." We dig into the complicated question of what language Jesus was speaking when he cried out "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me" in Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34. We unpack the way Psalm 22 serves as a motif in the passion narrative. And we detail the meaningful textual nuances of the restoration of Peter in John 21:15-19.

“It's not that we have little time, but more that we waste a good deal of it” – Seneca

With as little as 15 minutes a day, you can make substantial progress in learning biblical Greek and Hebrew.

Here are some quick tips for making time each day! 👇

For most of us, there are probably some obvious things we could cut out to make time for the biblical languages: Netflix, social media, etc.

But there some ways you can incorporate learning into your day WITHOUT adding OR subtracting anything - by multi-tasking!

The key is multi-tasking with activities that don't take a lot of brain power. Here are some of our favorites:

- Making coffee or a meal (3 min, 3x/day)
- Walking the dog (15 min/day)
- Between sets working out (15 min/day)
- Brushing your teeth (3 min, 2x/day)

That's 45 minutes per day! 🤯

Now, you don't always do Greek/Hebrew during all of these activities every single day. Sometimes days might, but other days you might only do it for some of them.

Regardless, that's 45 minutes of potential learning time. Even if you only use 1/3 of it, that's enough to make steady progress!

A key element for this working is the method of learning you use. Doing 3 minutes of textbook study while brushing your teeth likely won't be effective. But you could easily get through 300 words of comprehensible input, some vocabulary decks, or some fluency drills in that time!

This is one way Biblingo makes learning the biblical languages so accessible. The activities are designed to be completed in just a few minutes, and the app is always right there in your pocket!

So, what are some ways you could (or already do) carve out some time to learn the biblical languages? 👇
