N.C. A&T State to Represent MEAC in inaugural Celebration Bowl

NORFOLK, Va., November 22, 2015 - The North Carolina A&T State Aggies will represent the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in the inaugural Celebration Bowl, announced today. The game is slated for December 19 at Noon at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia. The game will air live on ABC.

“We are excited to announce that North Carolina A&T State will serve as the MEAC representative in the Inaugural Celebration Bowl,” said MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas. “To have three teams fighting down to the wire for their chance to serve as this year’s representative continues to demonstrate the strong parity and tremendous talent of these student-athletes and coaching staffs in the MEAC. I look forward to a great game and excellent experience for Aggies supporters and MEAC fans alike.”

North Carolina A&T State rose to the top of the MEAC’s tiebreaker formula following a three-way tie for first place along with Bethune-Cookman and North Carolina Central. All three teams will share the conference’s regular season title with a finishing mark of 7-1 in MEAC competition.

The Celebration Bowl pits the conference champion from the MEAC and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) against one another in a postseason bowl game. North Carolina A&T State will face the winner of the SWAC Championship game scheduled for December 5 in Houston, Texas.
Fans can purchase Celebration Bowl tickets at ticketmaster.com, by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000 or the Georgia Dome box office.
Tickets will also be available at the North Carolina A&T State ticket office. For more information, contact the North Carolina A&T State ticketing office at (336) 334-7749.

MEAC breakdown on conference title race and football tiebreaker

NORFOLK, Va., November 17, 2015 - The final Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) games get underway this weekend with three teams chasing the regular season title and the chance to compete in the Inaugural Celebration Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Celebration Bowl kicks off on Saturday, December 19 at the Georgia Dome. The game is slated for a Noon start and is televised live on ABC.

The MEAC’s tiebreaker process is solely to determine which team will serve as the MEAC representative in the Celebration Bowl against the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s (SWAC) regular season champion. In the event of a tie for the Conference title, all teams included in the tie will share the title and be named Co-Champions. Any MEAC team that does not compete in the Celebration Bowl game is eligible to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division I (FCS) Football Subdivision Championships.

Last year the conference made history by awarding five teams co-champions.

If North Carolina A&T State defeats North Carolina Central, then North Carolina A&T State would be the conference’s outright regular season champion and serve as the MEAC’s representative in the inaugural Celebration Bowl game.

Should North Carolina Central defeat North Carolina A&T State, coupled with a Bethune-Cookman loss to Florida A&M, then North Carolina Central would share the conference title with North Carolina A&T State, however, North Carolina Central would receive the berth to the Celebration Bowl because of its head-to-head victory over N.C. A&T State.

In the event of a three-way tie, featuring Bethune-Cookman, North Carolina A&T State, and North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T State would tentatively be the conference’s representative in the Celebration Bowl and all three teams would be named Co-Champions. North Carolina Central would be eliminated from the tiebreaker formula as the Eagles did not earn any points in the tiebreaker process with any wins against FBS or FCS teams, compared to Bethune-Cookman’s and North Carolina A&T State’s FCS non-conference victories.

Bethune-Cookman picked up four points in its win over Grambling State (SWAC) and North Carolina A&T State’s earned its four points in the win over Elon (CAA). Remaining tied from their point totals, both teams advanced to the next step of the tiebreaker process that decides the winner based on its Sagarin ranking.

North Carolina A&T State would tentatively seal the Celebration Bowl participation spot based on the latest Sagarin rankings.

As of today, North Carolina A&T State is listed at 137 in the Sagarin ranking and Bethune-Cookman is positioned at 175.

MEAC Tiebreaker:
1. If NCAT wins: (Celebration Bowl: NCAT)
2. If NCCU wins, NCAT loses, BCU loses: (Celebration Bowl: NCCU)
3. IF NCCU wins, NCAT loses, BCU wins: (Celebration Bowl: NCAT*)

100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. extend our condolences to Florida A&M University and FAMU Rattlers on the loss of a great leader Dr Nelson Townsend. He exemplified how to Be a Great!

01/09/2015

8:30 p.m. update

Nelson Townsend's funeral will take place at noon Wednesday in Gaither Gymnasium on Florida A&M's campus. There will be a viewing starting at 10 a.m.

Noon update

Florida A&M interim athletic director Nelson Townsend has died. He was 73.

University President Elmira Mangum said Townsend was a compassionate human being.

"The university lost a dear friend, excellent leader and administrator," she said in a statement. "We will miss Nelson Townsend. We join his wife and family in mourning this great loss."

The Rev. R.B. Holmes, Townsend's pastor at Bethel Missionary Baptist church, said he is currently with Townsend's family. Townsend collapsed earlier this morning before an 8:30 a.m. meeting, said FAMU spokesman Jimmy Miller.

"He was a great man," Holmes said.

"A great family man. A caring man. A blessed man. He went out in the way he wanted to go out, doing what he he does as a director and a strong Christian man. We're all devastated, no doubt about that. We know Dr. Townsend is definitely in a better place. We pray for his wife and his children."

Townsend took over as interim athletic director on Dec. 15 after Kellen Winslow resigned. He was in the middle of his third stint as FAMU's Athletic Director. He was AD from 1986 until 1987, and again from 2005 until 2007.

Townsend served as athletic director at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore and at the University of Buffalo. He's also in the MEAC Hall of Fame and the UMES Hall of Fame. When he first took over as interim AD, he said the department need to "re-establish its priorities."
