Researchers Discover New Way Pumpkin Fights Cancer: Pumpkin is already known to be a rich source of powerful anticancer nutrients like beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, potassium, fibre, cucurbitacins and curcumosin. But in a new surprise finding, researchers have found that a complex sugar (polysaccharide) in pumpkin fights cancer too. This natural polysaccharide is so toxic to liver cancer cells that it killed off 65% of them in a lab study by destabilizing the cancer cell’s mitochondria and triggering programmed cell death (apoptosis). So it’s no surprise that multiple population studies have linked eating pumpkin to reduced cancer risk in people. That includes 34% less breast cancer risk, 41% less lung cancer, 29% less stomach cancer and 55% less prostate cancer—all at a dose of about three servings weekly. Pumpkin is delicious roasted (with sea salt, olive oil and herbs), in soups, stews, sautéed, in salads, baked into bread, muffins and cookies, and even as a filing for pasta.

High dietary intakes of the carotenoid lutein are known to reduce the risk for at least eight different cancers. It also improves the health of our eyes and keep our brains sharper as we get older because lutein uniquely accumulates in the eyes and brain, while most other carotenoids do not. Most of our lutein comes from leafy greens like spinach and kale. But avocado is also a good source, and is quite special because the lutein is pre-dissolved in its healthy supply of monounsaturated fat. And that means we absorb lutein from avocado about 600% better than from leafy greens. So do enjoy that avocado on toast for breakfast, or plenty of guacamole as a side with lunch or dinner.

Red Pepper Compound Stops 91% of Lung Cancer in Vivo: Beta-Cryptoxanthin, found abundantly in red bell peppers, was shown in this study to reduce the number of lung tumors by 91% in mice. It also markedly improved their survival: after 100 days all non-treated mice had died, but incredibly 94% of the mice being fed beta-cryptoxanthin were still alive. But does this compound offer real health benefits to people? According recent population studies, those with diets high in beta-cryptoxanthin had 55% less risk of lung cancer, 62% less breast cancer, 51% less aggressive prostate, 63% less pharyngeal cancer and 20% less throat . Other studies even suggest this super-nutrient may help keep us mentally sharper as we age. Red bell peppers are the best dietary source, but other good sources are butternut squash, mandarin oranges, pumpkin, persimmons, and navel oranges. Cayenne , paprika and powder are also extremely concentrated sources. Bottom line: try to get at least three to five servings of beta-cryptoxanthin rich foods per week. Red peppers are great in salads, vegetable smoothies, roasted, grilled, stir-fried, in curries, stews or just plain raw.

Could Beets be the Next Superfood for Breast Cancer? Betanin, the compound that gives beets their deep red color, has been found so toxic to breast cancer cells that it slowed their growth to virtually zero and induced programmed cell death by collapsing the cancer cell’s mitochondria (the power plants of the cell). However—and this is very important—betanin did not negatively affect healthy cells. As if this wasn’t impressive enough, beets are also the richest dietary source of yet another anticancer compound called betaine. And a recent study found that women getting high levels of betaine in their diets had 50% less breast cancer (beets almost certainly played a role in this). In human population studies, eating beets regularly has also been linked to 46% less colon cancer risk and 45% less stomach cancer. But there’s another great reason to add beets to your diet: they give an energy boost that’s been proven time and time again by clinical trials—even improving the performance of elite triathletes and reducing their fatigue (and personally, beet juice gives me an unmistakable boost during my own workouts).

Tomatoes Found Surprisingly Toxic to Breast Cancer Cells: Tomatoes have become so famous for their role in reducing prostate cancer risk, we forget that they're actually quite powerful in fighting many others cancers, too. Especially breast cancer. In fact, tomato extracts were recently shown to kill 71% of breast cancer cells in vitro. And it wasn’t the lycopene. Tomatoes contain another powerful anticancer compound called alpha-tomatine, and that’s what was killing the cancer cells in this case. But do tomatoes benefit women? Yes, according to several recent studies, which showed women eating the most tomatoes had up to 41% less risk of breast cancer and 70% less risk for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. And both men and women consuming tomatoes regularly were shown to have 50% less colon cancer risk. How much tomato is needed to have an effect? Dozens of clinical trials have been carried out using tomatoes against cancer, blood pressure, heart disease and inflammation, and a typical dose is anywhere from 180 to 300 grams fresh tomatoes, or 50 grams of tomato paste, daily. Tomatoes are great raw as a snack, in salads, soups, stewed or baked. And Alkaline Diet fans take note: tomatoes have nearly double the alkalizing power of pure lemon juice!

Cucumber Compound Kills 89% of BRCA1 Breast Cancer Cells: The BRCA1 mutation is known to sharply increase women’s risk of breast cancer—fortunately, a healthy diet can decrease their risk just as sharply. And cucumbers may be an important part of such a diet. They’re a potent source of the compound cucurbitacin B, which has now been shown to “specialize” in killing off BRCA1-mutant breast cancer cells. In this study, cucurbitacin B killed up to 75% of normal breast cancer cells and killed 89% of the BRCA1 mutant cancer cells. There’s even good evidence that cucumbers work in women too, with a recent study showing that women eating cucumber every day had 34% less breast cancer risk. For extra protection, consider eating them with the skin, which contains the highest concentrations of cucurbitacins. Cucumbers are delicious in salads, vegetable smoothies, soups or all alone. Or try my personal favorite: slice thinly and marinate with vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, diced onion and sea salt overnight in the fridge (fresh dill can also be added).

Avocado Halts 99% of Prostate Cancer Cells and Reduces Risk in Men: Avocado extract was so toxic to prostate cancer cells that it reduced their growth rate by up to 99% in this lab study. Not surprisingly, avocado also appears to fight prostate cancer in men. A recent study from Jamaica found that men eating 90 grams daily had 59% less risk. That’s quite amazing protection for a single food. Avocados are also a great source of heart-healthy mono-unsaturated fats, potassium, magnesium, B vitamins, carnitine, dietary fiber, lutein, and other powerful antioxidants. So impressive is this super-fruit, that it’s even been tested in clinical trials with amazing results: lowering LDL cholesterol (especially the dangerous “small and dense” type) in overweight adults (dose: one daily), reducing triglycerides, substantially decreasing appetite (dose: ½ fruit daily). And best of all, eating about one avocado per day resulted in significant weight loss for adults in 3 separate trials. Avocados go great in any green salad, vegetable smoothie, marinated, drizzled with Italian salad dressing, or as part of my personal favorite—freshly made guacamole.

Rhubarb Slows Breast Cancer Growth by 78% in Vivo and Fights Cancer in Humans: In this study, researchers discovered that not only did rhubarb extract (aloe emodin) kill up to 85% of human breast cancer cells in vitro (test tube) but it also slowed the growth of breast cancer tumors in mice by 78%. Rhubarb contains powerful anti-cancer compounds such as emodin and aloe-emodin (as does aloe-vera) as well as physcion, which have been shown to kill multiple types of cancer cells in other studies. But does it fight cancer in people? A recent study on men from Norway suggests yes: those eating rhubarb at least six times per month had a 30% reduced risk for dying from any cancer in general. More specifically, they had 33% less risk of pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, stomach cancer, throat cancer and liver cancer combined. And rhubarb’s health benefits don’t stop there. It’s been tested in clinical trials (particularly in China, where it’s used as a traditional medicine) and shown to reduce cholesterol and triglycerides, improve intestinal barrier function, lower blood pressure and even aid in weight loss (as part of a herbal formula). And alkaline diet fans take note: rhubarb is so rich in potassium—the alkalizing mineral—that it delivers nearly 300% the alkalizing power of pure lemon juice.

Lime Compounds Kill up to 98% of Leukemia Cells in Vitro: Researchers have discovered that limonoids extracted from the seeds of limes were extremely toxic to leukemia cells, killing 98% of them at very low doses. Limonoids are powerful antioxidants that have been shown in past studies to suppress multiple cancers, and they are found only in the seeds, flesh and peel of citrus fruit. Citrus fruits also contain powerful anti-cancer flavonoids, vitamin C and potassium, making them true super-foods against cancer. In fact, population studies have shown that citrus fruit consumption may lower pancreatic cancer risk by up to 48%, throat cancer risk by 58%, stomach cancer risk by 31% and breast cancer risk by up to 26%. And more relevant to this post, a study from the USA showed that children consuming orange juice or oranges/bananas at least 1-3 times weekly in early childhood saw their risk of childhood leukemia drop by about 50%. Try to get your citrus as whole fruit or freshly squeezed with all the pulp, to maximize limonoid content. Personally, I drink the juice of one lime and one lemon daily, and it gives me an unmistakable energy boost every time.
