A congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA), joining together in the heart of Atlanta to worship, serve, and be nurtured by God.
Central is closed today in observance of Labor Day. We will re-open Tuesday at regular office hours.
With the All Church Retreat taking place this weekend at Montreat, we will not have our regular Sunday morning worship in the Central sanctuary on Sunday. Instead, we will have worship scheduled in Rand Chapel beginning at 11 a.m. We are grateful for Central member and Columbia Theological Seminary professor Dr. Martha L. Moore-Keish for preaching. The service will not be live-streamed. The parking garage will be open.
Central in the City on the move! Central members and staff attended the CAP & ADID Town Hall at the Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State this morning. Pictured here, members of Central in the City Jerry Miller and Gary Cornell. The area around our church is on the verge of trending upwards. As A.J. Robinson, president of Central Atlanta Progress, said, "South downtown is on the move." With new redevelopment in the area and the World Cup coming in 2026, it will be a dynamic time for this section of the city.
Last Thursday, Central had a special visit. Birmingham, Alabama resident Maury D. Gaston dropped by the church on his way to Hartsfield-Jackson Airport to pick up his daughter. Gaston is a retired executive from AMERICAN Cast Iron Pipe, the company which John Eagan founded. Maury is an admirer of Eagan and is involved in many of the historical works the company has dedicated to Eagan. His visit to Central was very meaningful. He has been in touch with members of Central's archive team about a presentation at some time in the future.
Thanks to all Centralites who took part in staffing our booth at the Summer Shade Festival at Grant Park! We are very grateful as we showed God's love to all people! Grant Park Conservancy
Central's Chancel Choir 'returns' this Sunday to our worship service after a well-deserved summer off! We are looking forward to the choir being an integral part of our worship experience. Last Friday and Saturday, the choir had their annual Choir Camp at Central and at The Harrington Center at Columbia Theological Seminary. Following choir camp, they enjoyed a happy hour at the home of Mike Coleman and Ted Brothers. We are looking forward to another great year of music at Central!
Represent Central this weekend at Summer Shade! The Grant Park Conservancy Summer Shade Festival takes place this weekend and Central will have a booth as we spread God's love to all people. We're seeking volunteers of all ages to help staff our booth on two-hour shifts on both days and participate in activities such as face painting, arts and crafts, and games. Good afternoon friends. The stream for Our Memorial Service for Mary Lucille (Lucy) Oaks Moore will begin at 1:35 p.m. with preludes beginning at approximately 1:45.
Central member Betti Rosszer came by Central today to drop off her painting, "Fall Quilt," to be photographed for our fall Central magazine which is slated to be published in early September. We are grateful, once again, for Betti's artistic contributions to the church. Here is how she described the piece: "This watercolor painting is inspired by artist Lou Davis’ tutorial. The painting resembles a warm fall quilt or a stained glass window. The individual pieces are different colors, shapes, and sizes, and the paint flows from one form into another, creating unique patterns and colors. Separately, the pieces don’t catch the eye, but joined together with a gold thread they create a vibrant piece, just as the individual members of CPC’s congregation are brought together by the Holy Spirit to create a harmonious group that reflects God’s love."
Central held our annual Blessing of the Backpacks this past Sunday during worship! We are holding all of our students of all ages in our prayers as they venture back to school!
This Sunday marks the final class of our dynamic Summer Series focusing on our Faith and the Climate Crisis. This Sunday, a group of Central members, including Robert Catterall and Susan Landrum, Director of Family Ministries, will facilitate a session in which we engage in "ideation" on ways that we can positively impact the climate crisis (this is planned to be an inter-generational session, with Central youth participating) The classes take place in the Central OAC Atrium on Sunday mornings at 9:45 a.m. We look forward to seeing you!
Don't forget our Blessing of the Backpacks takes place during worship this Sunday. In addition to a blessing and prayer from our staff, all our students will be provided with this unique tag to remind them of being wonderfully made as they venture into a new school year! We look forward to seeing you!
Central in the news! Thanks to whatnowatlanta for the recent article on Trinity Central Flats, the unique development led by the Capitol Hill Neighborhood Development Corporation, an organization formed by Central, The Catholic Shrine of Immaculate Conception, and Trinity United Methodist Church. Trinity Central Flats is a unique mixed-use affordable housing project, which will also feature solar power and an urban garden. Thanks to our members, Central in the City, and, in particular, member Jerry Miller for leadership on this project.

This Sunday, we welcome Mark Douglas, Professor of Christian Ethics, Columbia Theological Seminary, as a speaker to our Summer Series. Douglas will take on a big question: If it looked as though our species were really about to wipe itself out via climate change, would God intervene to save us from ourselves? The classes take place in the Central OAC Atrium on Sunday mornings at 9:45 a.m. We look forward to seeing you!
On Sunday, Central celebrated its one-year anniversary with Rev. Shannon J. Kershner at the helm as our senior pastor! Following worship, we enjoyed a barbecue lunch, a special presentation and gift to Rev. Kershner, an interview with Rev. Kershner hosted by Central member Adam Seeley, and a skit by Central's own 'church ladies.' We look forward to the next year and beyond with Rev. Kershner!
Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Due to the immense heat this summer, we are shifting this Sunday's picnic celebrating Rev. Shannon J. Kershner's first year indoors to the cool temperatures of Tull Hall. We plan to have barbecue "with all the fixins'" on the menu. The cost will be $10 per adult, $5 per child, and a maximum of $25 per family. You may register at the link below! In addition to our congregational lunch, Central members will selling our Fair Trade coffee, chocolates, and olive oil from Equal Exchange and Cafe Justo, our border partner! The campaign works on a variety of tasks including, voting rights, affordable housing, just immigration and environmental justice. The rally took place at North Avenue Presbyterian Church.
