Amplify and uplift Black voices!
Let's use our collective power.
Be anti-racist! Anti-racism is an adjective not an noun.

GSU has a history of disregarding students and Black people. Let them know we will not be pacified! We are paying constituents of GSU and GSU receives more money due to them having Black students and other people of color.
Don't be fooled by GSU graduating the most African-American students. All data has a story. Look where GSU is located and consider the HOPE scholarship as well as GSU being a public institution. Also you have to question how does GSU not only treat its Black students but also their Black faculty, staff, and neighbors.

Meet the Communications Officer

Name: alithia zamantakis
Pronouns: She/Her
Favorite Childhood Snack: Bagel Bites

Academic Background:
B.A. Sociology & B.A. Gender Studies, University of Utah
M.A. Sociology, GSU
Degree: Ph.D. Candidate
Major: Sociology
Concentration: Gender, Sexuality, & Race

My research interests include all things queer/trans of color critique, trans studies, feminist thought, and trans sexualities. My dissertation is an analysis of how cisgender (meaning non-trans) heterosexual men and cisgender lesbian/bi women construct ideas of desire rooted in transphobia/anti-Blackness and how those ideas perpetuate the murders of Black trans women.

As a woman of trans experience, I believe more knowledge about trans women is needed, more stories and positive representation for us and by us is necessary, and more attention to our lives is needed as our communities increasingly come under attack by a government never meant to protect us. As a white woman, I believe it is my duty to center Black trans women and other trans women of color and to actively be in solidarity with BIPOC of all (a)genders, because there is no liberation for some of us without liberation of us all.

Welcome to all new grad students and welcome back to returning students! We’re excited to continue meeting with you all and building interdepartmental community. Our monthly meetings will occur the 3rd Wednesday of every month from 9:30-10:30am. Any and all graduate students are invited and welcome to attend. Immediately after, from 10:30-11:30am, our e-board meetings will occur with departmental ambassadors invited to attend. If your department doesn’t have a grad alliance ambassador, reach out to your peers, select one, and reach out to us to let us know! Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and the increasingly unsafe condition of the state of Georgia, our meetings will be, for now at least, online. Links for the meeting will be posted on social media and sent out to our listserv the day or two before meetings. If you’re not currently on our listserv, DM us or email [email protected] to be added.

Pronouns: She/They
Hometown: Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Favorite childhood snack: fruit by the foot

Academic background:
B.S., Psychology (Minor in Sociology), Kennesaw State University
A.S., Psychology, El Paso Community College

Broadly, my research interests include race, sexuality, and gender. More specifically, I am interested in researching the experiences of Black Q***r women currently or formally in the carceral system and the ways in which they maintain joy. Lastly, I’m interested in researching Black Q***r women’s experiences in the academy as it relates to mental taxation.

As a Black Q***r graduate student, I aim to illuminate the stories of joy as I research Black women. Most importantly, through my research findings I vow to caste more light on the resiliency of this group by continuously valuing their lives and stories over the research.

I look forward to working and advocating on behalf of the graduate student body for the 2020-2021 school year.
