What technology did you use as a student that is now considered “retro?”

Georgia Tech library’s retroTECH lab gives visitors the chance to interact with vintage technologies like the Altair 8800 (the same type of microcomputer that Bill Gates used to write BASIC programming language) or more recent technology like the Playstation 4.

Assisting with the overnight water stops for the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, Eric Kaplan, ME 95, is the Manager of Mechanical Systems in Facility Design at Union Pacific Railroad. He is responsible for portable water systems in the railyards, including UP’s Big Boy with its 25,000-gallon water capacity.

The Mysterious Case of T-Man. Share your favorite “history mystery” from Georgia Tech to help ID stories for the next Alumni Magazine.

In the early 1970s at Tech, a masked figure called “T-Man” would show up to weekly pep rallies held by the Ramblin’ Reck Club to perform skits in a white leotard, gold briefs, boots, and a gold cape. T-Man mysteriously disappeared after 1975.

What epic concerts or performances have you seen on campus?

Throughout the 1970s, Georgia Tech hosted many prominent bands and artists, including Chicago; the Doobie Brothers; Earth, Wind & Fire; Kool & The Gang; Lynyrd Skynyrd; Traffic; Yes, and KISS. https://b.gatech.edu/46XzL4B

Where did you intern during your summers at Georgia Tech? ☀️ 🐝

For many summers were spent gaining internship experience.

Never before told story from a former Buzz:

"A lot of Tech students aren’t necessarily interested in sports, and there were some cases where they wouldn’t know we had a mascot. We wanted to spread awareness about Buzz.

To do this, we would order a large pizza with “Happy Birthday” written on the box. We’d take it to the largest lecture hall we could find, look for the shyest kid in the class, and then get the class to sing Happy Birthday to them.

Almost universally, the kid who received the pizza would think it was a mistake and most professors were just as confused. For us, it was just about outreach and helping people realize that there’s more to Tech than just academics."

Yellow Jackets dominate the World Series of Poker (WSOP) again.

Last year, Daniel Weinman, ME 09, won the WSOP Main Event and this June, Sam Porta, Cls 21, placed 10th in the $1,000 super turbo bounty no-limit hold-em freezeout. Porta beat out 2,600 entries.
