Radio Island public beach to reopen Friday after one-month closure for nourishment project BEAUFORT/MOREHEAD CITY — Just in time for the big Memorial Day Weekend kickoff of tourism season, county officials Friday will reopen the popular public beach access facility on Radio Island.

The Town of Atlantic Beach used an international design competition to select the architects to lead the design of a major upgrade to its oceanside boardwalk and surrounding areas. Over 50 architecture and landscape architecture firms submitted designs for the competition.

After narrowing the field to three finalists, the Competition Jury selected KUTONOTUK of Charlottesville, VA as the winner.

**Please note that the design is not final. KUTONOTUK will be visiting Atlantic Beach this summer to collect input directly from our citizens and will refine the design based on this public input.**

The current Town of Atlantic Beach Lifeguard Tower was built in 2008 and has served our Lifeguards and Citizens through 13 summers and numerous hurricanes. As a central base station for our Ocean Rescue Team, Tower 2, or “The Mother Ship” as our lifeguard staff have dubbed it, quickly became a staple of our Town and a focal point for family vacation photos.

After many years of weathering the storms, Tower 2 has served its last summer and makes way for a new replacement tower to debut this spring. The new Tower 2, funded with proceeds from the Atlantic Beach King Mackerel Fishing Tournament, is custom-built by Bausch Enterprises Inc. (BEI Watch Towers) out of Florida and will serve as the forefront of our Ocean Rescue Team. The tower is constructed of aluminum, stainless steel, composite decking and will incorporate a heavy-duty rescue board box with steps, a handrail, and a stable platform for those momentous beach photos.

After serving our community so faithfully, we felt it only fitting to send the old Tower 2 off in a blaze of glory as the centerpiece of our annual Smoke on the Water Bonfire. Join us at the Circle at 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 30, to ring in the new year and new beginnings for our Ocean Rescue Service!
