BEFORE AND AFTER ALERT! When your son is moving to his first post grad apartment, you do what you can to help him furnish his space. Even if it means refinishing one of your favorites finds you had been saving for a rainy day. This antique drop leaf table was painted in black beach milk paint by Shackteau Interiors and tastefully distressed to keep the rustic vibe. The top was sanded and stained with both natural and ebony stain and finishing oil by Fusion Mineral Paint for a rich finish. This piece actually complements the finishes in his new space perfectly. Looking forward to the big move this weekend! Our home will once again officially become "the empty nest."

CUSTOM ORDER BEFORE AND AFTER
The beachy vibe continues! My clients needed a kitchen table for their rental property in Maine and dropped off the cutest drop leaf table. It can be a challenge to remove the finish of factory finish pieces, but this piece was worth the extra elbow grease. I sanded the top and uncovered inconsistencies in the wood tones, surprise surprise, so bleaching was a must. After bleaching, I did a green wash to help neutralize any red/tones before doing a tan paint wash. Then I got to work to produce the beachy vibe using both white and grey paint, it was like an art project, ha! The top was then protected with several coats of General Finished satin topcoat. The base was primed, painted white, tastefully distressed and white waxed to complement the top. It is so rewarding to watch a piece transform into a totally different “vibe” to fit the design of a home.

BEFORE AND AFTER ALERT! If something has a scalloped "anything," it's coming home with me. This was a surprise find when picking another piece of furniture, and she had a couple boo boos that I wasn't sure I was going to be able to address. Boy, am I glad I took a chance on her! I had no idea what color to paint her, so I played it safe for a classic look and tastefully distressed her to highlight the unique base. The top and precious wood scalloped trim on either side received a paint wash/stain technique in order to keep the wood appearance light. This antique table has so many possibilities and is a true statement piece.

CUSTOM ORDER BEFORE AND AFTER ALERT! When a client mentions she needs a dresser refinished for a beach house and says, "I want a beachy vibe, I trust you," you get to work to provide her want she wants. I was so excited to work on this project because for the first time I immediately knew what I wanted to do. This dresser has some crazy factory distressing and when it was dropped off it scared me a little because I knew I was going to be glazing this piece. BUT, because of the crazy distressing, it took the "beachy vibe" to the next level. Fusion Mineral Paint's Champness was a must for this piece with a white glaze in their stain and finishing oil, one of my favorite combinations. I had no idea how the top would sand back, but to my delight it was perfect. I bleached it and did a paint wash ending with white stain and finishing oil for a driftwood appearance and protection. Now, my love for hardware is real, so when I saw these glass honeycomb k***s, I couldn't sn**ch them up fast enough. It was worth visiting two locations to get enough, I just love them on this piece! This project was a nice reminder that refinishing furniture "is" fun and rewarding when it turns out exactly how you envisioned it. HA!

Before and After Alert! Okay, the lighting is horrific in these photos, but I was at the mercy of my cell phone camera. So please don't judge LOL. I have had this coffee table in NH for almost 20 years. It has reached the brightest orange I think possible. This coffee table works perfectly in this space, and honestly, I couldn't wrap my head around going through the effort to try and find another piece that would work here. So, I decided it was time to give this dated coffee table a facelift. I wanted to share this project with you to let you know it's not necessary to get rid of pieces that work perfectly in your space just because they have reached their ugly stage. It truly is amazing what a little paint and new hardware can do to transform a piece. Take a chance on one of your pieces that have reached their ugly phase and mix things up a bit in your space.

If you want to give a piece a second chance, please visit my website at https://www.emptynestbylw.com/custom-orders

BEFORE AND AFTER ALERT! When I picked up this cabinet, I realized she was going to be a bit more challenging than I anticipated. The fact that she was missing a back and the drawer was stuck inside were dead giveaways. No worries, challenges like this make the world of furniture restoration rewarding and "interesting." I loved her rustic vibe, so it was my mission to reimagine her to reflect her roots. Milk paint by Shackteau Interiors with some chippy goodness was an obvious choice, experimenting along the way to produce an antique finish. The top had heavy staining and unnecessary moldings, so after a prayer session, I grabbed the sander and wood bleach to work some magic to produce a rich rustic finish to complement the piece. I decided to plank the back of the cabinet with salvaged wood and replace the warped bottom to give her a fresh, but charming new look. Fusion Mineral Paint's Champness with a whitewash finish was applied inside. I loved it so much I contemplated keeping the doors off! After much debate in my head, new hardware was selected to complement the white porcelain casters and lock k**b as well as the new fabric drawer lining. Watching all the pieces fall into place "eventually" when working on hot messes is why I think I gravitate towards beaten and battered pieces. Challenge yourself, it’s good for the soul!

BEFORE AND AFTER ALERT! “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” I had completed this piece and HATED it. I even left the state to get far away from it in the hopes that distance would make the heart grow fonder, but it didn’t. I came home and completely started over. Call me crazy, but producing a piece that I would keep myself is the only way I work. Now, I did keep the original vintage hardware and the backsplash piece that I had already redesigned. The backsplash was redesigned because all I could see was Mickey Mouse ears when I looked at it HA! As much as I love milk paint, it wasn’t doing this piece justice, so I flipped to Fusion’s Midnight Blue and added a black glaze to add dimension, exactly what this piece needed. I had originally painted the top which I knew I was going to bother me, and I was right. Now the top is stained in a rich finish giving her the perfect contrast she deserves. The original piece was a serious hot mess, but now she gives of craftsman style vibes with a fresh new look!

BEFORE AND AFTER ALERT! Oh, how I miss working on dramatic transformation projects. I bought this single piece many moons ago, and just recently I tried to give her away "as is" because I wasn't sure what to do with her. Apparently, she was a little too scary since I received no serious bites. So, I decided to accept the challenge myself and bring her back to life. This project is a serious reminder to see the beauty behind every trainwreck!

CUSTOM ORDER BEFORE AND AFTER ALERT! I love it when my clients score unique antique pieces. Talk about amazing details! They wanted to match the cute little school desk I recently finished in black milk paint for them, so I used Black Beach again by Shackteau Interiors, and protected the entire piece with h**p oil. Prior to painting, I did strip and sand most of this piece to remove the scratches and significant imperfections to ensure a smooth finish. I also lightly distressed this piece to preserve its aged appearance and highlight those knock out arms and feet. I also gave the inside a little love by cleaning it up and conditioning it with h**p oil along with lining the bottom with a coordinating fabric for a little special touch. Milk paint is such a pleasure to work with on antique pieces, it gave this beauty a second chance at life!

If you have a piece you are interested in reviving, please message me or visit www.emptynestbylw.com for more information.

BEFORE AND AFTER ALERT! This client was the absolute worst! I may never work with her again because she was me. HA! I picked up this fantastic bookcase many moons ago from Barn Digger. This beauty has taken up real estate in my workshop for I swear it must be almost 3 years now. I had always intended on keeping this piece for myself but could never decide on what I wanted her to look like. So, when I was on my workshop cleaning mission, I decided it was time to finish this piece. I knew I wanted to strip the entire piece and keep the interior and shelves raw to match the other pine pieces in my space. Since the back piece had seen better days, I decided to remove it and purchase new pine to plank the back. When it came to the exterior, a raw finish was not an option, so given the other finishes in the room, blue was an easy choice. Paisley by Fusion Mineral Paint was chosen, and I made a game day decision and applied a paint wash as a compromise since I really did want the entire piece to be raw wood. I won’t bore you with the debacle that occurred after the Paisley wash when I applied a whitewash finish using wax that I absolutely hated and removed. Now, for what may be my favorite detail of this piece is the drawer hardware. The pull is a perfect match to the curves on this piece. I even love the rusty finish. I have been holding on to this pull for years specifically for THIS PIECE. OMG I still can't get over how perfect it is. Thankful this beauty is no longer collecting saw dust in the workshop and is now front and center in our home displaying my love for milk glass. Happy Friday!

Happy Monday! I’ve taken a little break from picking, but was so happy to have ventured out today. Oh how I love an old cabinet and as soon as I saw the hardware on this cutie I knew I had to secure her 🥰 I’ve also been looking for planters and I knew these crocks would be perfect🌼. And last, but not least, this VERY rustic table stole my heart and was happy to have had the opportunity to rescue her. Great way to start the week 🤗

🌼BEFORE AND AFTER ALERT!🌼It’s not often I come across a set of nightstands/end tables, so when I do I sn**ch them right up! This solid maple Heywood Wakefield set had a lot of potential, so with some tweaks here and there, the transformation began. I decided to remove the scalloped molding from under the top and simplify the bottom front trim to match the sides. After another color debate in my head, I decided to go with my favorite white, Casement by Fusion Mineral Paint. For the top, I always envisioned a light tone, and after an initial stain attempt, I switched gears and incorporated the Pottery Barn dupe look. With every project, I learn something new about myself. Here, I learned to just go ahead and re-do something right away if I hate it, otherwise I will absolutely torture myself until I do, HA! I added another favorite, black antique reproduction pulls to the dovetail drawers to give them the pop they deserved. Such a sweet set perfect for nightstands or end tables, the choice is yours!

🇺🇸BEFORE AND AFTER ALERT! I am a such a sucker for a cute cabinet. When I laid my eyes on this precious piece, I knew she would be the perfect addition to our family room as an end table. I decided to keep her rustic and use milk paint. This meant not obsessively prepping her, which gave me some serious anxiety HA! Though, that’s the beauty of milk paint especially when you want that “chippy” look. Keeping the original finish, in most cases, helps promotes the chippy process. At first, I became concerned that the white milk paint would not provide decent covered without priming. Though, I reminded myself, “trust the process.” So, I didn’t give up and after multiple coats the perfect white covered was achieved. Then using a putty knife, I went to town producing some chippy goodness which is so satisfying. But the inside was a different story since it was a hot mess. So, I grabbed my heat gun and removed the old finishes before coordinating her to match our space with vintage glass hardware, new fabric and paint. Choosing milk paint for this project was an easy decision, now if I can just find a new lamp for her, which is no easy feat, we will be good go!

Please see photos for more details and products used.

CUSTOM ORDER BEFORE AND AFTER
You would think making decisions for smaller pieces would be easy. Though for some reason, trying to decide how to finish this adorable bookcase was somewhat problematic. Choosing the color wasn’t the issue because after providing a sample and having the opportunity to see where the piece would be displayed, Blue Pine by Fusion Mineral Paint was a fantastic choice. But, painting the entire piece blue would be boring, and the client mentioned she liked a wood grain appearance. So, after some thought we decided to give the back and the top a wood grain appearance using the “Pottery Barn Dupe” technique since sanding and staining the back was not an option. It was an absolute pleasure working on this cutie especially since it is a sentimental piece, she belonged to my client’s mom. This is a nice reminder that a house really becomes a “home” when it is a reflection of what and who we love.

🌸BEFORE AND AFTER ALERT - MOTHER'S DAY ADDITION! I picked up this bench at The pro.found market several years ago. It has sat in the corner of my back yard, and I had no idea all the screws had pretty much rusted out. So, in honor of Mother's Day, I decided it was time to give her some love, for me. I was all set to paint her black, but in the last minute, I decided to be brave. I used Fusion Mineral Paint's Champness and added a slight antique glaze with their cappuccino stain and finishing oil. I wanted to highlight the top finials, so I gave them an old-world appearance. The wood was sanded and stained with cappuccino stain and finishing oil and protected, I just love the rustic feel. They say, "nobody puts Baby in a corner," but I look forward to putting this baby back proudly in the back yard corner where she will shine!

🌸May all you moms out there have an amazing Mother's Day weekend! Make sure to do something just for you, not only on Mother's Day, but anytime you need too. You deserve it!🌸

CUSTOM ORDER BEFORE AND AFTER! When my friend, who lives right next door, mentioned she had wished she scooped up one of my previous cabinets, I made a point to look out for another option for her in my travels. So, when I saw this solid piece at a recent estate sale, I had hoped she would see the potential because I sure did. Luckily, the piece was the perfect size, so the transformation was a go! She plans to use this piece in a large foyer for extra storage, and it is going to be a welcomed pop of color for the space. Now, in the final phase of the makeover I needed to tell her NO PEEKING because she has a clear shot from her house to my workshop. I love a fun surprise reveal, but I couldn’t resist texting photos during the process. The quality of Early American furniture, especially cabinets, is bananas compared to the other “stuff” you find on-line. Whether you find a piece in your travels or even ask me to keep a look out, these cabinets make fantastic storage options, plus they are so much fun to transform!

CUSTOM ORDER BEFORE AND AFTER ALERT! When my client contacted me about an antique school desk, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But, when she dropped her off, I couldn’t stop smiling, she was the cutest! My client will be using this piece as an end table in a room she calls the library, so it will be the perfect accent. My client actually plans to use the back as the front, so I made sure to keep the desk number visible and moved the name plate from the side to the front where she originally wanted to add false hardware. I am a sucker for precious details. In order to refresh the piece, but maintain an aged appearance, black milk paint was the obvious choice. Unfortunately, the top was a hot mess and was not going to stain well. So, the faux Pottery Barn wood look was used to also incorporate a modern twist. I did end up freshening up the inside of the desk and the brackets because there are some things my OCD won’t let me ignore. Such a fun project, especially when this repeat client with VIP status just drops off a piece and says, “I trust you.”

BEFORE AND AFTER ALERT! For a while now I have been wanting to attempt a “floral dresser.” Though, I could never really decide on the color combination because I wanted to make sure the piece stayed sophisticated. When I stumbled upon this dresser, I decided it was finally time to give it a shot. I knew when I finished this piece I wasn’t going to be able to capture truly how unique she really is. Pictures do not do this piece justice. Whether she is used in a bedroom or another part of the home, she really is a statement piece, a true sophisticated beauty.

CUSTOM ORDER BEFORE AND AFTER! While my client is in Aruba enjoying the beach AND celebrating her engagement, I am home putting the finishing touches on her son's dresser. Something tells me she is having more fun than me. HA! The best part of custom orders really is witnessing the complete transformation. I am not going to lie, this was not a piece of cake, and I may have a developed a few gray hairs along the way. BUT I have to say, Manor Green by Fusion Mineral Paint is a showstopper! I also added their natural stain and finishing oil as an added layer of protection, and it deepened the color to absolute perfection. After sanding the top down, which was initially a complete mess, I added three layers of Fusion's stain and finishing oil to produce this rich finish. The modern hardware was purchased by the client, but I needed to create a back piece for the k***s to fill the unusual, recessed area - metal washers for the win!

I don't know why I am surprised each and every time I finish a project. I honestly can't believe what a little paint can do to make a piece look like a million bucks!
