Today is Gold Star Spouses Day.
This is a day set to recognize, honor and remember those who lost their spouses to combat. The concept of “Gold Star” loved ones date back to the first World War, but Gold Star Mothers’ Day was officially observed for the first time in 1936, when President Franklin Roosevelt announced it would be the last Sunday of September each year. More than 70 years later, President Barack Obama extended the recognition to include the fallen soldier’s entire family. In 2010, the first Gold Star Wives Day was held on April 5; this was later changed to reflect military spouses regardless of gender.
Our hearts are with all of our Gold Star families every day, but especially with Gold Star Spouses today.
