Happy Independence Day, New Jersey!

It was a true pleasure to spend last night and this morning visiting the 4th of July parades in each of these towns:

-Barrington Borough
-Haddon Heights Borough
-Bellmawr Borough
-Mount Ephraim Borough
-Runnemede Borough

All in all, we saw over a thousand people out celebrating our nation’s independence and our great country. I spoke with the mayors and councilmembers of each town and also ran into another guest: a Rough Rider named Teddy.

Now it’s time to cool off and watch some Phillies baseball!

Glad to spend some time today in the City of Camden, celebrating the 67th Anniversary of the city’s San Juan Bautista Parade. 🇵🇷

The parade is one of many events held by the Parada San Juan Bautista, Inc. organization in the month of June, aimed at celebrating the region’s Puerto Rican culture and history. We are all very lucky to live in an area of the country that is so rich in cultural diversity.

Congratulations to the event organizers on a successful parade and best wishes for a beautiful post-parade concert this afternoon!

Just left the State House after today’s Assembly Voting Session, where we voted to pass the bipartisan FY2025 State Budget. The budget also passed the State Senate today and it now heads to the Governor for his signature into law.

I was proud to cast a vote in favor of the budget, which included the following priorities, among many others:
🔒Full pension payment
✏️ Full K-12 formula aid
🍼 Continues Pre-K expansion and increases investment in childcare
📚Maintains higher education funding
📉 Reduces state debt
🫂 Increases mental health funding
🏥 Ensures fair pay for essential healthcare workers

Welcome home, Battleship New Jersey!

Today is Juneteenth.

It’s the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

It’s the day that Union Army General Granger announced federal orders in Galveston, Texas, proclaiming that all people held as slaves in Texas were free.

I make sure to say this each year: While today is indeed a day to celebrate freedom, we should also use this day as a reminder of the work that lays ahead of each of us to make this a more just nation.

Senator Nilsa Cruz-Perez, Assemblyman William W. Spearman and Assemblyman Bill Moen wish everyone a Happy Juneteenth!

Today and all days, we must remember the importance of protecting freedom and equality in our nation.

Our office is open today. In observance of the holiday, the office will be closed on Friday, June 21, and will reopen on Monday, June 24.

Happy Father’s Day, New Jersey.

I had a great day with my wife and kids — we visited the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia.

We also had a nice dinner with my parents to close out the day. Got to spend some quality time with my old man.

Sending well wishes to all dads, soon to be dads and those dads who are no longer with us.

In July 2026, New Jersey will be the world’s stage as we host the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final. ⚽️

This morning, I chaired a meeting of the Assembly Tourism, Gaming and the Arts Committee, where we heard testimony on the FIFA World Cup New York/New Jersey Host Committee’s progress in preparing MetLife Stadium for 2026.

Our state expects over $2 billion in economic activity and over 1 million visitors from hosting the World Cup Final. We welcomed testimony from the New Jersey Division of Travel and Tourism, as well as the Meadowlands Chamber, which provided a historical perspective and recommendations on the opportunity in front of us.

Additionally, we know that the City of Philadelphia has also been selected as a Host City for the 2026 World Cup. This will certainly have an impact on the Southern New Jersey tourism economy. To that end, we invited the Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey to provide testimony on their recommendations as we prepare to embrace this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

As the polls have now closed on the 2024 Primary Election, I want to congratulate the candidates — from both parties — who won their respective races and now head to the General Election in November. 🇺🇸

My wife and I took both children with us to cast our votes tonight. Here, I’m helping my daughter walk up the steps into our polling place.

We are committed to ensuring that our children understand the importance of participating in our democratic process. It’s this idea that millions of military servicemembers have fought to protect, including our kids’ grandfather, great-grandfathers and great-great grandfather.

As Benjamin Franklin once said, we have “a republic, if you can keep it”.

TODAY IS PRIMARY ELECTION DAY, NEW JERSEY! 🗳️ 🗳️ 🗳️

If you voted by mail or early voted, GREAT!

If you need to still vote today, we have you covered. Your polling place is open until 8:00PM tonight. If you need to find your polling place, visit: https://voter.svrs.nj.gov/polling-place-search

Please take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day.

This weekend, I spent some time traveling around the 5th District to visit some of our towns that held Memorial Day ceremonies, including Deptford Township - Municipal, Borough of Audubon, NJ, and Gloucester City. Below are some pictures from around the district.

I would like to share of a quote by President John F. Kennedy, which goes as follows:

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

To those who joined us at the ceremonies, thank you for helping us do just that.

As many of us take some time to visit the Jersey Shore this holiday weekend, know that many of our coastal towns have been preparing for your arrival.

As one of the sponsors of the Boardwalk Preservation Fund law, which appropriated $100 million of American Rescue Plan Act funding for Jersey Shore communities to strengthen boardwalk infrastructure, I know that many of our towns have already taken advantage of this program to replace or repair their boardwalks.

Keep an eye out for some new lumber during your stroll on your favorite boardwalk this summer. 🪵

Happy 150th Merchantville! 🎉

My family enjoyed visiting the Borough of Merchantville’s 150th Celebration at Wellwood Park earlier today.

I had the honor of presenting a state legislative resolution commemorating this important milestone to Mayor Brennan and Councilmembers Woods, Perno, Morales, Fitzgerald and McLoone.

The event has a number of activities like a big inflatable slide, a kids train ride, free face painting, and tables of other activities. It is available until 4:00 PM today.

Today I joined Pennsauken Mayor DiBattista, Deputy Mayor Rafeh, Committeemembers Olivo and Roberts, as well as Township Administrator Killion and Library staff and board members to break ground on Pennsauken’s new municipal building and library project. The township and library were awarded $9.3 million through the NJ Library Construction Bond Act, which helped facilitate this dynamic new public library and municipal building.

Congratulations to Pennsauken!

Today was a special day as the Gloucester County law enforcement community came together to welcome the dozens of Police Unity Tour participants who stopped by Fasola Park in Deptford Township on their way to the nation’s capital this weekend.

During the stop in Deptford, we took time to join the family of fallen Deptford Township Police Department Officer Robert Shisler in unveiling the sign that will mark Route 47 after our fallen local hero.

As the first prime Assembly sponsor of the law to rename this stretch of state highway after Officer Shisler, I’ve been looking forward to this day for some time. This is a small gesture to remember our fallen officer, but one that will help keep his memory alive.

Earlier, I joined other South Jersey legislators - Senators Cruz-Perez and Tiver, Assemblymembers Spearman, Miller, and Katz - as well as Camden Mayor Carstarphen in visiting the Battleship New Jersey for a tour of its hull renovation project. It is currently in dry dock, at the same berth from which it was launched in 1942, at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

Thanks to Battleship CEO Marshall Spevak for arranging the tour for our members, many of whom who supported the state budget resolution to help fund the dry dock project.

We know what this ship means to the tourism industry and economy of South Jersey and the entire Garden State. We are certainly looking forward to seeing the Big J back on the Camden waterfront in just a few more weeks.

Volunteering and service to community is an opportunity that we all should embrace.

Last week, while attending an event celebrating Camden’s (which is why I am wearing my school colors), I had the pleasure of running into these two ladies: Josie and Shirley.

They were both coaches for the North Camden Little League during the same time period when I was also coaching. Back then, I went by a different title: Coach Bill.

I truly enjoyed bonding over our time coaching at Pyne Poynt Park and how it’s very likely that many of the kids we coached are now graduating high school or even college. I also heard that some of the kids I coached have already joined the workforce and are doing well.

I know a few Marines that will be visiting this site, once completed.

Last week I stopped by the St. Paul's Episcopal Church - Camden in Camden City to check out “Cooking for Camden”.

This program was designed by passionate Rutgers University—Camden Honors College students in collaboration with St. Paul’s Cooking for Camden. The program aims to not only reduce hunger, but to increase nutrition among our food insecure population. The student volunteers also focus on casting a wider net of community involvement, from corporate spaces, local organizations and other schools.

I was able to chat with 4 student volunteers while they prepared last week’s meal. During our conversation, they told me how thankful they were for some of the partnerships they have fostered. Be it from grants from local food stores, like the Ravitz Family ShopRite, to their partnerships with local restaurants who donate leftover prepared foods.

We talked about a piece of legislation that I have been working on, bill A2141, which requires certain supermarkets, grocery stores, and food suppliers to donate food under certain circumstances and how that ties directly to the work they’re doing.

It was very encouraging to see our college students not only recognizing that this issue exists right in our own backyard, but to then take the initiative and do something about it amongst themselves.

A solid Arbor Day 2024 🌳 in the City of Camden. The NJ DEP Commissioner LaTourette joined Camden County and Camden City officials to announce a state “Leafing Out” grant for Camden and 9 other NJ municipalities. Camden was awarded an $850,000 grant, which was part of the USDA funding that came to New Jersey through the federal Inflation Reduction Act. The funding gives communities the tools to start, plan, and advance a strong, self-sustainable forestry program that will enhance the quality of life for our residents.

We commemorated the day with a ceremonial tree planting in Farnham Park and were joined by the NJ Tree Foundation.

Twenty years ago today, our community lost a special guy and a friend:

Pvt. Nicholas Parisi of the Borough of Bellmawr

When I think of Nicky today, the word “service” is what always first comes to mind. He was a member of Bellmawr Fire Department #1. He was the Junior Firefighter of the Year for Camden County from 2002 to 2003 and a graduate of Triton High School. Nick was also a soldier in the U.S. Army.

I’m thinking of his family today. 🇺🇸
