“This is one road of many. I think it is shameful how many Maine roads have fallen into disrepair. Route 188 going up to Lincoln is another example. I don’t know what the solution is, but I think a hard look at infrastructure funding needs to be done”

Maine Democratic leaders agree to reverse controversial road funding and pension changes Senate President Troy Jackson described the changes to Maine's two-year budget as “consensus” fixes.

'A power grab': Maine Democrats seize control of transportation funding Majority Democrats on the Appropriations Committee took control of the state's transportation budget from the Transportation Committee.
“I was surprised and disheartened that the Appropriations Committee majority, without notice, decided to assume control of the Highway Fund and divert nearly $60 million away from transportation resources starting next year,” said Bruce Van Note, Commissioner of the Maine Department of Transportation. “MaineDOT Work Plans require long-term, predictable funding, and if these proposed changes become law, we will have to cut work from our current Work Plan. Such a drastic change will impact everything we do, including highway and bridge projects, transit funding, and initiatives aimed at promoting resiliency and clean energy. Importantly, this will hobble our ability to apply for federal grants, which means the impact is more than the state funding cuts.”

Maine legislators, in the cover of darkness, slammed through a partisan budget raiding the state’s highway fund, while making substantive changes to the way roads and bridges are funded in the future. Ironically, while Maine’s citizens were recovering from a blizzard that left half of the state “in the dark”, the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee voted late at night to eliminate up to $60 million in critical transportation projects beginning on July 1 and for every year thereafter.
