Canady specialized in pediatric neurosurgery and was the chief of neurosurgery at the Children's Hospital in Michigan from 1987 until her partial retirement in 2001. After completing her residency at the University of Minnesota in 1981, she became the first black woman to become a neurosurgeon.
Leonidas Harris Berry was an American pioneer in gastroscopy and endoscopy. After receiving his medical degree, Berry worked briefly at the Freedman's Hospital in Washington, D.C., and then at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois where he specialized in gastroenterology and retired in 1975 as chief of endoscopy and senior attending physician
James McCune Smith was an American physician, apothecary, abolitionist, and author who was born in Manhattan. He was the first African American to hold a medical degree, earned from the University of Glasgow in Scotland. After his return to the United States, he became the first African American to run a pharmacy in the nation.
Marilyn Hughes Gaston is a physician and researcher. She was the first black woman to direct the Bureau of Primary Health Care in the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration. She is most famous for her work studying sickle cell disease (SCD)
Patricia Era Bath was an American ophthalmologist, inventor, humanitarian, and academic. She invented an improved device for laser cataract surgery. She was a woman of many first! She became the first woman member of the Jules Stein Eye Institute, the first woman to lead a post-graduate training program in ophthalmology, and the first woman elected to the honorary staff of the UCLA Medical Center. Bath was also the first African-American person to serve as a resident in ophthalmology at New York University. She was the first African-American woman to serve on staff as a surgeon at the UCLA Medical Center. Bath was also the first African-American woman doctor to receive a patent for a medical purpose.

Dr. Charles Richard Drew became one of the most important scientists of the 20th century. His pioneering research and systematic developments broke barriers in a racially divided America. His technique of blood plasma preservation during World War II not only saved thousands of lives but innovated the nation’s blood banking process, preservation, and storage techniques that eventually became adopted by the American Red Cross.
Rebecca Lee Crumpler, born Rebecca Davis, was an American physician, nurse, and author. In 1864 she became the first African-American woman to become a doctor of medicine in the United States. Crumpler was also one of the first female physician authors in the nineteenth century.

Dobbs Family Health & Wellness Center will be following this holiday schedule starting next week from December 26th - January 3rd. We will resume our regular schedule on January 4th, 2023. While we may not be taking appointments, you can still submit your request through the portal as well as contact the office. Please keep in mind there will be a slight delay in response time.
