Brent Taylor was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Despite the initial fear, he was thankful for the exceptional care provided by Piedmont every step of the way. In February 2021, while quarantined at home due to a co-pilot's COVID-19 positive test, Jeff Vickers, a pilot with over 40 years of flying experience, experienced a stroke. His wife, Paula, quickly recognized his symptoms and called 9-1-1, leading to his swift transport to Piedmont Fayette and subsequent airlift to Piedmont Atlanta.
At Piedmont Atlanta, vascular surgeon Dr. Charles Ross performed life-saving surgeries on Vickers' carotid arteries, which had caused the stroke. Vickers spent ten days in intensive care, and six weeks later, he underwent a second surgery.
Remarkably, Vickers made a full recovery and was cleared by the FAA to return to flying in May 2023, after two years of rehabilitation and training. He flew for nine more months before retiring in February 2024. Dr. Ross joined Vickers and his family on his final flight, celebrating his recovery and return to the skies.

Two sisters, Mary Kate and Anna Lee, made an extraordinary difference by donating kidneys. Mary Kate's gift to their father, Michael, allowed him to walk her down the aisle at her wedding. Anna Lee's altruistic donation also gave a stranger a new lease on life.

Karla Redding-Andrews, the daughter of legendary musician Otis Redding Jr., was only five years old when her father died in a tragic plane crash. However, her father’s passion to make a positive difference in kids’ lives through music, and empower them with education, is as strong and vivid as her memories of the icon she called “Dad.”
Meet Hallie Chestnutt, a true hero at Piedmont! During her shift, she noticed a newborn in distress and immediately sprung into action, performing CPR and saving the baby's life. Thanks to Hallie's clinical training and swift response, the baby was moved to the NICU for further care. But Hallie didn't stop there. She turned her attention to the mom, offering comfort and support during an unimaginably stressful moment. We celebrate Hallie for her bravery, compassion, and unwavering dedication to patient care.
Piedmont's dedication to breaking down barriers to patient care was exemplified one March afternoon when an unexpected event unfolded in front of Piedmont Atlanta. An 18-wheeler truck pulled up, driven by Michael Norton, who was experiencing a sudden, intense pain in his chest. Luckily, Piedmont Atlanta, recognized for its leading cardiac care, was nearby. Dr. Tina Varghese and the ER team made sure Michael felt reassured and taken care of every step of the way.
But it didn't stop there. Our Public Safety team even looked after Michael's 18-wheeler while he received treatment. "I was able to park my truck, not worry about it, go in and be seen," Norton shared.
Michael was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, or AFib, thanks to Piedmont's swift response. We're proud to break down barriers to care and make a positive difference in our community, one patient at a time!

Raylan Sherls had high blood pressure and didn’t know it. It made simple tasks like yard work and climbing stairs hard for him. In 2019, he found out he had Congestive Heart Failure and had to be resuscitated after a medical emergency. Raylan was a candidate for a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) which helps the heart work, pumping blood to the rest of his body. Since getting the HeartMate 3 LVAD implanted in May 2023, he is now able to get back to his normal life and routine. Raylan (pictured right) says he wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Dr. Robert Cole (pictured left) and the team at the Samsky Advanced Heart Failure Center providing rigorous training, support and maintenance tips so he can enjoy everyday life.
