Many kids are crashing in the day which impacts their behavior, emotions, and focus! Just like we go through as adults! Between dyes and sugars it’s a lot to process all day- try some of these out for healthier snacks pair them with a protein or fat.

Hacking life as a neurodivergent, travel edition.

Did you know that if you wear a sunflower lanyard at an airport, the staff are trained to recognize it as an indication of hidden disabilities and be ready to provide assistance, if needed? (Or just give you extra time/space if you appear to be struggling.)

You can get one for free at participating airports. You can also order one from hiddendisabilitiesstore.com.

P.s. They don't ask for proof or for information about a diagnosis. ❤️

Also, last I checked, the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program is recognised in more than 160 airports worldwide, including over 50 in the United States. (And the list is growing)

Follow Hidden Disabilities Sunflower - USA on fb and .us on ig for more about this amazing program.

I love Sundays!

Sundays are for rest, spirituality, family, recharging, setting the intentions of the week…

If we run around all week, day after day, we never take time to see where we have been- where we are going! I’ve been practicing this for awhile now, and I have to catch myself all the time! Running too fast- going too hard…STOP, and take a beat 😃! We need the time to be intentional, focused, and rested!

Happy Sunday! How will you recharge for the week ahead?

Yes!
Slow down
Care
Ask questions to understand
Be kind
Never give up on people 💜

Wow, ty for this powerful visual from Momwell, being a mom and working with so many moms- many of these are true for me and those I work with. Makes the mom guilt or being mad at your partner. Remember this is a hard job, it’s ok to feel these ways but we need to support each other and talk about these things more! It makes us feel guilty most of the time or “crazy” when we feel these emotions in motherhood. Hugs to all the mamas out there. It’s hard, but you’re doing amazing and you’re not alone.

Thank you Momwell for this reminder.

"Why is nobody talking about the HARD parts of motherhood?

And I’m not just talking about wrestling your toddlers into car seats or keeping your kids from arguing (not that those things aren’t hard too.)

I’m talking about how hard motherhood can be on your mental health.

Nobody talks about how motherhood can:

〰 Cause resentment
〰 Change your relationship
〰 Bring up trauma
〰 Change your friendships
〰 Be all-consuming
〰 Increase your risk of anxiety, depression, and other perinatal mental health challenges
〰 Be so exhausting
〰 Be so thankless
〰 Be so isolating
〰 Make you feel so guilty
〰 Be so demanding 24/7

But we’re not doing moms any favors by only talking about the good side of motherhood.

Motherhood can be wonderful. But it can also leave moms struggling with their mental health and feeling like they don’t know how to cope.

When we don’t talk about these things, we leave moms feeling lonely, isolated, and wondering if they are failing.

I want us to normalize talking about the hard–not to be negative, not to scare moms, but to help them prepare for ALL of motherhood–the good, and the bad.

When moms enter motherhood understanding the full picture, they can know that they are not alone, that they are not the problem, and that they are not failing."

Happy year 3 @ PUSD to me! Excited for my team!! We have a space! A WHOLE room, therapists can’t be picky! We often work in halls, closets, playgrounds, and classrooms: but we need a space to house ourselves, give special attention to some, and have groups! I’m so so thankful ❤️
An empty room to some, endless possibilities for the campus to therapists 🥳🥳
Going to be a great year!

👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻
Hi friends!
I’m Melissa- the Mobile OT!
Taking a minute to reflect on my anniversary of passing my NBCOT boards 11 yrs ago this week with my best friend !
My career in OT has been one of the best blessings in my life. It has pushed me: mentally, emotionally, and even physically. I have met thousands of amazing clients and families while working in various states. I have met lifelong friends. My career has provided a life for my family I never could have dreamed of coming from a small lake town (outside Cle OH) and being a first generation college grad.
I meet people where they are: lost, challenged, or facing a stressful time and watch them bloom and make progress towards health. Find new ways to live and find hope again! I have been where many of my clients are...scared, confused, overwhelmed, oppressed...because of this I value helping and empowering them. I am blessed to be an OT! I am so thankful I chose to take a risk and start OT school once upon a time, as hard as it was, it will always be the best decision I have ever made for my life! I love being an OT!
🥂 to the next 10 yrs of growth, love, challenges, and connections! Ty for listening 😉 & celebrate every step you’ve made along your journey. The big and small are all worth reflecting on and celebrating!

This week we are celebrating BIG in my household! 🥳😆

Why?!

My private student loan is FINALLY paid off! Early! 14 years 🤦‍♀️, something I didn’t realize would be so overwhelming when I started in school. I borrowed in 2005! I share this because it has been a burden. It has taken my freedom. It has made me work SO hard- many jobs….juggling as I was unsure of where my hours would come from between each job. You see in rehab facilities and schools we had hours only as there was caseload…which made some hard times. Especially with these huge loans to pay.
I have been limited in coursework, certifications, time off, masterminds, private practice and much more due to these loans. My degree changed my life- but the debt also changed my life 😬…
I am so thankful that I am done with these payments but am thankful for the lessons I learned along the way.
If you have questions or want some support on paying off student loans let me know! Many of us have to take large loans out to change our life, change our future, and change our circumstances so wanted to share some inspiration! Keep hustling 💜! Say yes to opportunities and work smarter not harder.

Thankful for all this career has taught me, connections I’ve made, and experiences I’ve had! At the end of the day I love what I do and am grateful for the opportunities , OTs rock 💜💜

How It All Started....

Hello! My name is Melissa, I am the Mobile OT!! I started this journey years ago after seeing Occupational Therapy rehab, while working on my social services degree in 2003! I started my OT training in 2005, leaving my hometown of Sheffield, with my then 5 year old son, to the University of Findlay- to change my life! I was a young mom on a mission; to help others and make a better life for my family. I graduated in 2009 and WOW has Occupational Therapy changed my life! I have been providing a variety of OT services for 10 years. Throughout my journey, I have learned just how important independence with our many “occupations” are to our well being and health through my own challenges, roles, and grievances! As a mom for 19 years to a boy with hidden sensory issues and ADHD, I learned how challenging things like routine, academics, and emotional regulation can be for kids. The mother guilt, the difficult teacher conferences, the shame that I was doing something wrong as others were bragging about their children, the constant fight with a child; is all exhausting. My son taught me so much and I’m thankful for him and what he’s brought to my life. He is especially talented in sports, he is a social butterfly, and he is so caring. I wish I had known and heard about sensory prior to him being almost a teen while I was in OT school! Nevertheless, he is special and he was a challenge, but he has grown to make me proud and overcome so many obstacles while teaching me so much! Through our health journey we learned the importance of holistic approaches for both of us; using supplements, vitamins, diet, alternative health professionals, movement, sports and workouts, and having the right support at school were SO important! I love to share these things I’ve learned with other parents and clients.

This personal experience created a passion in me to help kids learn and do their best at home, school, socially, and in the community. It also has given me a holistic lens when looking at behavior, medical challenges, and sensory issues in clients of all ages. At this time I was working in Rehabilitation clinics and home health. I was very fond of home health and helping people in their homes where things mattered to keeping independence. Soon I saw how much more I could help parents and children function for day to day experiences if I were in their homes.

As I worked more with various students and families, I realized the gap between home and school was something I was very interested in merging! I loved working with moms and connecting with them to see how to better help the students. I started working in homes for the Ohio Virtual Academy and loved seeing students in their natural environment. This continued to grow my desire to help children and families in their homes with whatever was causing them issues, deficits, and limitations in their lives while also supporting the parents. Moms especially need support; ideas of what to use, someone they can vent too, and someone who has been there.

The Mobile OT is the result of all my experiences coming together and the direct need private therapy provides is personalized and convenient care for all ages. I have a passion for finding the pieces to how individuals are “ticking”, a detective of what is hindering them, and how to address it or adapt it. I LOVE working with kids, but honestly in every setting I’ve worked in I just enjoy helping PEOPLE. It is FUN, rewarding, and makes me feel extremely blessed and lucky to be an OT; meeting and helping so many individuals! Currently I am working throughout the west side of Cleveland in schools, in homes, and now privately through the Mobile OT to address needs in the community. I look forward to meeting and talking with you. OT’s are unique and creative with developing skills, advocating for clients, working with families/support systems to educate, provide client centered approaches, and research based interventions for many who are dealing with difficulties. We strive to help our clients live their life to the fullest :) their best life if you will!
