🌸 ¡Día Internacional de la Mujer! 🌸

There’s a saying that when the devil offers a bouquet of roses, there’s always a dagger inside of it. The temptations that we are offered always seem so good that we don’t want to refuse them. But it’s a perceived “good” (ie pleasure, love, acceptance, power, fame, wealth) wrapped in poison, darkness, and death.

It’s sad how many people choose to live in darkness. They’ve become accustomed to the darkness, to the numbness, and the false security that their drug of choice offers them as a way to escape the pain. No one gets addicted to anything because they’re happy or content, but because they don’t know how to cope with the deep rooted problems in their lives. But there’s always hope and here is a game plan:

1️⃣ Don’t hide from God or run away from Him. Instead, run to Him. He is always ready to forgive, offer grace, and the desire you have to quit is literally a grace He offered you first. Commit to praying every day, spending time in God’s word, and also utilizing the sacrament of reconciliation whenever you fall. The Eucharist is Jesus and whenever we receive Him, the Light of Christ pushes out the darkness more and more.

2️⃣ Talk to someone. Addiction cannot be overcome alone. Whether that’s a pastor, counselor, therapist, doctor, caring friend, or a 12 step program (ie Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, or SA), we need accountability in order to overcome these problems.

3️⃣ Start introducing better habits into your life. A person turns to the addiction because they’re coping with something (Ie stress, anger, anxiety, sadness, loneliness, etc.) Figure out what you’re feeling before you usually fall. Then make a list of things you can replace that habit with (Ie call a friend, pray, exercise, hang out with family, take a cold shower, go do something you enjoy, go serve someone else and do something kind for them, etc.). There are better ways to cope.

You are more than your addiction. You are more than your sins. You weren’t created for the darkness. You were created to live in the light. And this light has a name: Jesus Christ. You are loved and I am praying for you!
