Safeguard Your Back While Lifting
Lifting is a common cause of lower back pain. Common everyday activities, such as unloading grocery bags from the car or lifting your young child, can lead to lower back problems.
Lifting with your back bent, or lifting while twisting, may cause a sudden injury to your lower back or repetitive injury over a period of time, leading to chronic tissue damage.
Here are a few tips to help alleviate low back pain:
* Bend at your knees, not at your lower back; a completely flexed (forward bent) back can be highly susceptible to a ligament and/or disc injury
* Pivot your feet and hips, rather than twisting & bending forward.
* Hold the object close to your chest while straightening your spine.
While lifting is a part of everyday activities, having a job that includes heavy lifting may increase your risk of developing lower back problems. Be mindful of how your body is feeling when lifting and remember to drink a lot of water. One of the keys to a healthy spine is a hydrated spine!

This inspiring young lady came to us with pain and told she was finished growing and nothing except surgery could be done. Though she was told her curve wouldn't change with physical therapy, she knew she didn't want surgery. She stayed positive and went through Schroth training with us. I wouldn't say it was fast but I would say it was worth her time as she has now moved herself out of surgical range (which is usually 45 degrees for kids and 55 deg for adults)! Moral of the story: Don't assume that nothing can be done. Sometimes, if you're lucky, all it takes is some motivation and effort.

Posture is life! If you don’t fight gravity actively, it’s dominating power will slowly sneak up on you.
This gentleman came in to us because he was tired of back pain, traditional methods that didn’t work and a fear of impending surgery if he didn’t take a more active participation in his spine’s collapse. DeNovo, or adult onset scoliosis, is an idiopathic spine condition that can affect anyone.
While some people are able to immediately adjust their posture toward midline, others often don’t even realize they are off-center until they see it in our assessment session. Through the 3- dimensional approach of the Schroth Method he was introduced to his “body blocks”. He was able learn how to stack his “blocks” in such a way to auto-elongate and self-correct by looking in a mirror. In the beginning, using visual cues was the easiest way to find this new posture but, over time, his body, his vestibular system, his eyes and his muscles will start to intuitively “get it” and be able to find his corrections because they simply feel better than his old collapsed positions.
If you’ve been told that back pain and aging is something you have to live with, I stand up (you’ll have to imagine that part) and shout “don’t believe it!” I have seen positives changes to pain, function and posture, time and time again, in my clinic. As this wonderful gentleman has affirmed, it’s never too late to start doing something better. Though he will have to work at his corrections every day, his neuromuscular system will start to create a new habit and new strength pathways. I challenge you to believe in yourself and the wonders of your body to heal, become strong and balanced once centered. If you’re interested in finding out more about your posture, give us a call!
