That's it for Sheauxnough and another sweltering International Eddy Day on the books! We hope you all had as much fun as we did. SouthPop will be closed for the time being as we prepare for our next exhibit; a selection from our permanent collection to wrap up our 12th exhibition season opening at 7:09 on July 30th. Stay tuned for updates!

For today's we'll give you a sneak peak at some of the items we're considering to display next. Here's a photo of the staff working the Armadillo World Headquarters beer garden. I have no idea who is in this photo, who took it, or what year. If you know, leave the info in the comments!

Once upon a time:

DID YOU KNOW?
The name for the Armadillo was inspired by the use of armadillos as a symbol in the artwork of Jim Franklin, a local poster artist, and from the building itself. In choosing the mascot for the new venture, Wilson and his partners wanted an “armored” animal since the building was an old armory.

Armadillo World Headquarters, Austin, TX, 6/13/75:

This is an album by the country rock band the New Riders of the Purple Sage. It was recorded live on June 13, 1975, at the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, Texas, and released on November 1, 2005. It was the fourth complete New Riders concert that was recorded in the 1970s and released in the 2000s as an album on the Kufala Recordings label.[2][3]

At the time of the concert at the Armadillo, Skip Battin was the New Riders' bass player. Battin wrote or co-wrote three songs that appear on the album. Previously a member of the Byrds, Battin had joined the New Riders in 1974 after Dave Torbert left to join Kingfish. Also in the NRPS lineup for this recording were band co-founders John "Marmaduke" Dawson and David Nelson, and long-time members Buddy Cage and Spencer Dryden.

According to a statement on the back cover, the CD "was mastered directly from the original quarter track analog reel to reel tape at 7.5 ips. The few initial anomalies at the beginning of the show have been preserved for authenticity."

What's your take? Was the Armadillo World a product of Austin TX, or was Austin TX. a product of the Armadillo World Headquarters?

FOR ALL OF THE PATRONS, MUSICIANS AND STAFF THAT HAVE GRACED THE DOORS OF THIS PLACE;

I have always been a connoisseur of music and Austin in the 70's was no exception of that. Someone who had put it quite eloquently said "Life is made up of small comings and goings and for everything we take with us there is something we leave behind." It can never happen again". So, this is my offering to the Dillo, Enjoy!

"I think music in itself is healing.
It's an explosive expression of humanity.
It's something we are all touched by.
No matter what culture we're from,
everyone loves music."
