ATX! It's a perfect weekend to explore the Southern Walnut Creek and the new Austin-to-Manor Trail. This route has very few road crossings -- five to be exact, all in the last 5.5mi. Two of them have crossing beacons.
Safety & Planning tips:
🌎 Note: Google Maps hasn't added the final section of the Austin-to-Manor Trail yet.
Here's the Total **Round-Trip** Mileage to help you plan an out-and-back ride...
Govalle Park << >> Manor = 26.4 mi
YMCA East << >> Manor = 19.4 mi
Austin Tennis Center << >> Manor = 14.2 mi
Decker Elementary School << >> Manor = 8.6 mi
Govalle Park << >> YMCA East = 9 mi
Govalle Park << >> Austin Tennis Center = 13.2 mi
YMCA East << >> Austin Tennis Center = 7.2 mi
💧Be sure to hydrate before, during, and after the ride. Carry a couple bottles. Bring some sweet and salty snacks.
🌡Amenities are very limited along the trail, so plan accordingly. The only spots to refill water are at Govalle Neighborhood Park, YMCA East Communities, Austin Tennis Center, and in downtown Manor. Water at Ben Fisher Park is not always reliable.
🌮 Grab a taco in Manor! There's a food truck park just down the street from Ben Fisher Park.
🚦Use the pedestrian/cyclist beacons to cross at Johnny Morris/Daffan Ln and Daffin/Decker Lake Rd. They're safe and fast!
🚨 Be careful crossing Lindell Ln and Parmer Ln. The traffic tends to be light, but cars may not expect you given the newness of this section.
🙏 Remember: This trail is for all types of users -- cyclists, walkers, runners, wheelchairs, families with kids, and dogs on leash. Also, wildlife! Please be patient, courteous, and mindful. Demure. Especially when descending that long hill north of Loyola...you know the one. Don't be that person crossing into the other lane to speed around the corners...👀
🚲 Wear a helmet and have fun out there!

Summer Cycling Safety
Wrap up the summer like a cycling champ! Follow these 11 awesome safety tips to keep your rides safe, fun, and refreshing! 🚴♂️🌞🚴♀️ Get There ATX CapMetro Texas Department of Transportation Ghisallo Cycling Initiative City of Austin Government
1. Stay hydrated! Drink before, during, and after your ride. Remember electrolytes and salty snacks.
2. Light Clothing. Wear light, loose, cotton-blended shirts. Synthetic materials wick sweat away and deprive your body of the cooling benefits. Bring a change of shirt if you're diving into some heavy A/C or going somewhere you don't want to be all sweaty.
3. Plan Ahead. Watch the weather, avoid the hottest times of day, and plan a comfortable route.
4. Avoid busy roads. These are hotter and full of car exhaust.
5. Hop a (CapMetro) train! Or take a bus! Mix and match your bike with other modes of transport to help you get where you want to go. Enjoy a summer book on the ride.
6. Use bike paths. These are safer and cooler, away from traffic, and usually shaded with trees. Greenbelts and paths near water tend to stay cooler (eg, Southern/Northern Walnut Creek Trail, Shoal Creek Trail, Johnson Creek Trail, Butler Trail, Violet Crown, etc.)
7. Seek shade. Take breaks.
8. Cool off indoors. Find a public library, coffee shop, or coworking space like Trick Hat or a museum. Or, cool off OUTdoors—in a pool, splash pad, or creek along the way.
9. Try an e-bike. The CapMetro MetroBike program is expanding around Austin, giving more people an opportunity to try e-biking. It's fun, fast, and a little easier on those scorching summer days.
10. Tune your bike. Don't put off that repair any longer—there's nothing worse than changing a flat in the Texas sun or breaking a chain. Some bike shops, like Mellow Johnny's and East Side Pedal Pushers, are located just off the bike path.
11. Wear a helmet. The styrofoam insulates your head against the heat, and you can wet a bandanna for additional cooling. Be court

A massive shoutout to everyone who joined us on the journey to McKinney Falls State Park. Covering over 10 miles, our group braved a sizzling 91 degrees, and a bit of rain but that couldn’t dampen our spirits! 🌦️🌲 We were able to cool down in the upper falls and start a fire for smores, burgers, and sausages! Thank you to all our sponsors for making these unforgettable experiences possible. Your support fuels our adventure and community spirit! 🙌 There’s no better way to start your school day than riding your bike from a camp out! 🏕️ Students put their skills to the test by using hand signals, using Austin’s cycling infrastructure, and riding safely as a group. The 5 Steps of Helmet Fitting Ready to ride? Remember your helmet! Wearing a bike helmet can drastically reduce the chance of a serious head injury if you wear it correctly. Don't worry, it's easy! Here are 5 simple steps to help keep you rolling towards safety. STEP 1 - Find the front. The front of the helmet is sloped like the brim of a hat. Once you've found it, place the helmet on your head. STEP 2 - Position the helmet on your head using two fingers to measure the distance between your eyebrows and the front of the helmet, leaving enough room to see while protecting the forehead. STEP 3—Tighten the helmet so that it's snug enough to " rock out" or shake your head without it falling off. Many helmets have a dial or wheel at the back of the head or top of the helmet to adjust for comfort. Don't go too tight; you don't want to give yourself a headache. STEP 4—Adjust your straps around your ears. The straps should come together below the ear, forming a "V." This will help ensure your helmet stays in place in the event of a collision. STEP 5 - Buckle the helmet. Using two fingers stacked vertically, measure the space between your chin and the strap. If you can fit more than two fingers, it's too loose. If you can't fit two fingers, loosen them so you can talk and drink water comfortably. Completed in this order, are The 5 Steps of Helmet Fitting that will help make your cycling journey a long one. Remember, wearing a helmet is not just a choice, it's a responsibility. Help end the streak of traffic fatalities on Texas roads by wearing a helmet, following the flow of traffic and obeying all traffic signs.@txdot Special thanks to#SanAntonioBCycle for video edits and production. #BikeMonth #RideSafe #WearAHelmet #endthestreaktx #austin #sanantonio #atx #safety #bicycle #commute #txdot # outdoors #love #photography #kidsonbikes #reels #video #active #trending #explorepage #sports #biketoworkday #biketoworkatxday2024 #ghisallocycling #biketoworkda

🗣️”PASSING ON YOUR LEFT” Day 1 of spring bike camp in SATX just flew by! We hit the Salado Creek Trails practicing trail etiquette by keeping to the right of the path and carefully passing pedestrians on the left. These seasoned cycle academy kids were AMAZING at communicating, signaling, scanning and most importantly . . . having fun on bikes 🚴 👑KOM (kids of the mountain) Did we mention we take these kids up Hiawatha Street everyday? These kids have mastered navigating their gears to conquer this hill with confidence. #endthestreaktx #saladocreekgreenway #kidsonbikes #springbreak #sanantoniotx #kom

January in Central TX has been brutal! Here's a fun flashback to our last Austin Golden Rollers ride of 2023. A taco cruise along Ladybird Lake with an intrepid group of riders from Lamar Senior Activity Center. Cool temps and sunny skies! Let's all hope for more of that so we can get our trikes rolling again soon... Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you can’t ride! Let’s gear up for winter riding. 🧤🧣🧥🪖Use layers, gloves, and face coverings to stay cozy. When using beanies and ear warmers adjust your helmet so it’s still snug and secure. ❄️ If roads get icy or wet adjust your tire pressure. Let out a small amount of air, just like you would for a vehicle. 🌬️Watch out for wind! Strong and sudden gust can be dangerous. 🤠But most importantly enjoy the ride! If you see a cyclist this season, give them a round of applause 👏🏽. We’re doing everything we can to keep rolling. Thank you Marco from @milacoffeesa for cheering on our @goldenrollers for braving the wind and cold for their weekly ride.
Some of the Ghisallo team share their highlights of 2023- what was yours? 🧡 From our hearts to yours, have a safe and happy new year! #Happy2024 #DreamTeam #Community

Today let’s look at how cyclists can use defensive riding techniques to avoid being hit by a distracted driver’s door. Avoid the Door Zone The door zone refers to an approximately 3 foot area next to a parked car, where bicyclists are endanger of being hit by an opening car door. “Dooring” is one of the leading causes of bicycle / car collisions. Ways you can avoid the door zone: Pass parked cars with 3 feet of space when possible. If you spot someone inside a parked car, anticipate that they will open a door and give them space. Always look over your shoulder before moving over or changing lanes. If you see a car that recently parked, give them extra space. Follow @ghisallocycling for more safety tips! #bikes #bikecommuter #bikesafety #bikelanes

These South Texas summer days ☀️can be brutal 🥵 and most likely you’d rather be outside early morning or late evening 🌆 To ensure a safe outing, stay visible with lights 🔦 bright clothing 🟠🟡🟢 or reflective wear 🪩 Enjoy your outing and remember - Ride Bright at Night! . . . 🌈 Hi-viz fluorescent colors work by enhancing light in the visible spectrum. They are most useful when UV light is still present, like during dawn, dusk, or daylight. 🪖 Helmets are a great way to add both hi-viz and reflective elements!
