QUIZ ANSWER. Although it may look at first glance like these birds are having an argument, this is what's known in the animal behavior world as "begging"—when a juvenile perches in front of its parent, opens its bill and chirps insistently (usually fluttering its wings as well). As pretty much all our commenters pointed out, the odd thing in this photo is how much bigger the young brown bird is than its "parent." The juvenile's stocky proportions, thick neck, pointed bill, and overall matte brown color mean this is a BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD. The bird on the right has the sharp markings and small, straight bill of a warbler. Black-and-white Warblers are more streaky overall, particularly on the crown, back, and shoulders. Blackpoll Warblers have a solid black cap, white cheek patch, and white throat. The black throat, black cheek, and especially the yellow spot in front of the eye mark this as a male BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER. Brown-headed Cowbirds are fascinating birds known as "brood parasites"—females build no nest and don't help raise their young; they lay their eggs in other birds' nests and let the hosts do the work of raising them, often at the expense of the host's own young. Late summer is a good time to watch out for a small adult bird feeding a comparatively enormous youngster—a neat insight into an intriguing evolutionary process. Learn more about these species in our All About Birds species accounts: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/black-throated_gray_warbler/overview and https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/brown-headed_cowbird/overview Many thanks to Samuelle Simard-Provencal and the eBird/Macaulay Library for sharing this photo, taken in August in British Columbia, Canada.
