The philanthropic dream team! ✨It was an honor to have Steven González and Laura Villagran Johnson from PNC Bank and Debbie Johnson from Successful Giving join us for our Austin Gives workshop yesterday! They shared so many tips for companies looking to explore corporate philanthropy, and we think Steven said it best, "You can't be a good corporate citizen without being in the philanthropy space. If you're not giving back to your community, you're just doing it wrong." Stay tuned for our next installment of Austin Gives this fall!

We’re excited to share quotes from two of the incredible high school students participating in our Summer Intern Program with AISD: Ailia and Zarita! 🎓 We have students interning at companies across our city, learning new skills to prepare them for the workforce and getting a first-hand look at what their future careers could look like.

“I was given the opportunity to attend a SMPS luncheon featuring Travis County Judge Andy Brown. I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to participate in a conference alongside many talented marketing specialists. I’ve also had the opportunity to work with InDesign…I’ve created a series of master resumes, campaign posts, consultant badges, and more. These projects have definitely been the most rewarding because they are used to represent the company.”
-Ailia Zhao - Rising 12th grader at LASA High School, interning at O’Connell Robertson

“I have been working on a 3D model of downtown Austin. I’ve been trying my hardest to learn and understand this new tool. It has been fun and challenging at the same time. I have also learned to trust my coworkers and have made friends who want to see me go places. I have taken that into my soul and learned I can gain that kind of friendship through other parts of my life, like at school.”
-Zarita Garach - Rising Senior at LBJ Early College High School, Interning at HKS, Inc.

Austin Chamber Issues Statement on City Council's Climate Plan 07/15/2024

Austin Chamber's Board of Directors voted to issue a policy statement to support Mayor Watson’s resolution advancing a comprehensive bond package to fund climate infrastructure in the coming years. The Board feels that Mayor Watson's proposal allows for a thoughtful and comprehensive approach to climate protection, aligning with our goal of balancing fiscal responsibility, economic sustainability, and environmental stewardship. We appreciate the opportunity to develop a strategy that considers the long-term fiscal impacts on businesses and residents.

The ongoing discussion at City Council highlights the urgent need to prioritize affordability in our city, and the Chamber must continue to speak up on issues like this to ensure that our city can continue to be a place where people of all income levels, and businesses of all sizes, can thrive. We are so grateful for the immensely talented individuals who make up our board, and one of those is Bobby Jenkins, the Vice Chair of Austin Gives. Yesterday night, we gathered for an Austin Gives event where Bobby shared some gems of wisdom to people looking to get their companies involved in corporate philanthropy; here are just a few:
-Doing good is good business- when a company is engaged in philanthropy, everyone wins.
-When a team can volunteer together, a whole different level of bonding takes place. It's a great way to attract and retain people.
-If a company has a reputation for giving back, people in Austin care about that. They want to use companies who care about our community and are trying to make it a better place.
-If you're looking for a place to start and are overwhelmed by the number of nonprofits in our community to choose from, follow your heart. Pick a cause that matters deeply to you - that means more than anything and will motivate your employees to do the same.
Thank you again to Bobby for sharing so much wisdom and doing so much good in our community.
