Earlier this year we began using tablets out in the field on distribution days, which has really streamlined a lot of our data admin. Now we've also taken our yearly surveys online for high-school students, as well as using them for pre- and post-surveys for workshops.

This is a win-win-win development!
🧑‍💻 Students are getting even more tech savvy
🕓 Our teams are saving hours and hours of entering data from paper
🌳 Which is also saving many trees!

Big thanks to Sothea, Sothy and Theada who shared what they had learned from their Possibilities World workshops with an energetic training on Communication, and the importance of working together to complete our 'big picture'. When all team members are on board with vision - and the strategy of how to get there - great things can be achieved!

We recently welcomed Salon, the librarian at Cows for Cambodia's new learning center, to KVLC to learn some useful tips for her new role. Chenda shared library processes and organisation of titles by grade, as well as offering her experience on how to engage students in reading activities and library games.

Very happy to exchange and collaborate with our community partners on engaging more young Cambodians in reading!

Visak came up through our urban programs in Siem Reap since primary school, and won a PLF scholarship to study Civil Engineering at the Institute of Technology. But always ambitious and dreaming of studying abroad, he began applying for international scholarships in his first year in Phnom Penh and gained a fully-funded scholarship from the Vietnamese government to study Electronic Engineering at the University of Post and Telecommunications in Hanoi. He now works for a Cambodian phone company, managing their database...
🎤 "I chose to study engineering because I was good with computer, physics and maths so it was a good fit with my skills. And I hoped that major would help me grow faster than other major. I was very happy to get scholarship from PLF to study in Phnom Penh. But when I arrive there, I felt that maybe can make the opportunity to go even higher, and to study a major that not available in Cambodia. So I applied for international scholarships - two times to China failed, and then the last one, Vietnam, I passed. And it was my favorite major also, Electronic Engineering.

It was amazing to have this opportunity. It was a 5 year study. The first year we just study Vietnamese language. And then for four years we take our bachelor degree with Vietnamese students. Arriving there, I felt many things. It's very different - the culture, the food, the people. The way of teaching, the way of living. The first year, so difficult for Cambodian students and some didn’t stay. But after we studied Vietnamese for one year, it become more comfortable. And then we study with their students, in Vietnamese and English also. And for the degree, I really love that subject.

I graduated with good result and I got interview straight away back in Cambodia and only 2 weeks after graduating, I start in the job I am working now. I love my job. But in Cambodia the technology is not so developed like in Vietnam. Like my major, it's a bit difficult to find a school to study in Cambodia. So I hope that one day we have a school and teachers like that, and when Cambodian companies recruiting, they will find their Khmer managers, not foreigners. I hope that next year I will study my master, and then I find a way to improve myself even more. I hope that I can be a university teacher, and help to build capacity in intelligent education in my industry.

Without support from PLF, I wouldn’t have finished Grade 12. So before PLF, I thought I would be a tuk-tuk driver. No plan, no possibility. But after PLF helped me, I could start to plan, and then when I finished Grade 12, I feel like I'm stronger than before, I can make a plan. And look to the future in a different way.

Still now, not many people know about the meaning of life, and the importance of education. So they don't feel like they need to try. ‘It's okay. It's fine. Don't go to school.’ And have the same life as everybody else in their village, and then the big problem, they give up. They don't have feeling to try anymore. They can get small job and get money straight away. But they don’t think about a future plan. And that is the problem.

So in the mentorship sessions, I talk to students about the importance of planning, to have a strategy to follow. For me at that age, I had three plans ... Plan A, plan B, plan C. Plan A was PLF scholarship, and I worked hard to get it. Then I make new plan to study abroad. Always having a plan. So I think when they see me, they start to see a solution. They know that they want to study at Phnom Penh, but they not sure how. When they see me, they feel like they can see a way to get there too.

We've been holding monthly sports sessions at middle school locations, as we lay the groundwork in a cross-program strategy to minimize drop out in these grades. Sports especially can help to keep boys in school, and along with targeted initiatives in our library, workshops and mentorship programs, we are deploying it as a tool to improve male retention through Grades 7 to 9.

Activities include firm favorites volleyball and football, as well as frisbee, tetherball and badminton which are new to the students - meaning they are having fun while also learning new things, as well as building social, teamwork and goal-setting skills! 🤾🥅 🏀

More 🌟 Graduation Gold 🌟 as we say congratulations to Chamnan and Kosal!

Chamnan has just completed his Bachelor in Banking and Finance from Paragon International University, while Kosal finished his degree, majoring in Database & Programming at the University of Puthisastra, back in 2023. Sometimes (well, often...) graduation ceremonies in Cambodia are held a while after students complete their studies. A long wait for students, but that makes their moment in the spotlight all the more satisfying.

A massive achievement to arrive at this milestone and we are so proud of you both!

Big thanks to our community partners Cows for Cambodia who provide meat for our daily lunches at KVLC, who recently invited the science class to come and visit their project deep in the countryside. Our students loved learning about the different types of cows and how to raise them successfully, and were also super interested in their bio-gas project that converts cow dung into cooking fuel.

All in all a very interesting trip for our students, and thanks so much to the team for their useful explanations!

Following on from last months's uni career fair, our workshop team hold a series of Career Prep sessions for our Grade 12 students, before they fully knuckle down to studying for their up-coming national exam. Attending both the fair and these workshops is a pre-requisite for those wishing to apply for our university scholarships and underlines their commitment to choosing the major that suits them the most. Focussing on the setting of SMART goals, and enabling lots of group discussion and idea sharing as well as fun activities, these sessions are designed to really distill their decision-making process and ensure they are on the right track for their futures!

At this month's food drop to our Chreav and Pouk food bank recipients, we invited Sreyneang - PLF alumni and nurse - to give a general health talk to the families about common illnesses. Medicine is all too often over-prescribed in Cambodia, leading to unnecesary expense and increased resistance to antibiotics. Helping families to understand when an illness can be treated at home or requires a trip to the hospital empowers them to take better control of their health and that of their children.

One student who was feeling under the weather volunteered to demonstrate thermometer use, and fortunately with no fever could just go home and rest. All families left with a basic healthcare kit and information sheets to take home.

Thank you so much Sreyneang for sharing your knowledge and care with our wider PLF community!

Our annual uni career fair is a very significant event in our calendar as Grade 12 students start to really firm up their plans for after high school. Choosing the correct major and field is crucial, and with little information available at the public high schools, there are many gaps in understanding what exactly a particular degree will involve, and what the employment prospects are after graduation.

We invite our PLF uni mentors, both graduated and still studying, to present about their respective majors and answer the many questions that high school students have. With 17 fields represented, for many high schoolers this event sheds light on subjects they didn't even know exist, or helps make up their mind between different majors they are considering.

Attending this event, as well as the Career Prep workshops that follow, is a pre-requisite for students wanting to apply for our university scholarship program, to ensure that they are aiming for the path best suited to them.

A very crucial and timely decision, as the countdown to the national exams begin in earnest!

Colorful creativity is also extending to our science classes, where students in Srayang have been learning through hands-on activities with the completion of their biome projects. After studying the different biomes of our planet - tundras, deciduous forests, taiga, alpine, rainforest, desert, grassland and savanna (yes, we had to Google some of those too ;-) ) and taking a module test, they have created models of their favorite biome and presented them to the rest of the class. 🌳🏜️🏝️🏔️

Science teacher Ravuth reports that students found this project especially "interesting and joyful. They love this kind of activity and it helps a new way for them to learn about the subject."

Activating our PLF Youth group of high school students as positive role models to encourage participation in mentorship sessions and workshop activities is part of our strategy in improving middle school retention. Identified by UNICEF as a national issue even prior to Covid(*), boys especially are at risk of dropping out after primary school, due to socio-economic pressures of families living in poverty, and the expectation that males can earn more to help alleviate these challenges.

Huge thanks to our PLF Youth teams who have presented these sessions. You can be proud knowing that your first-hand input is helping your younger peers understand the importance of school and staying focussed on their study:

Another key element of our staff development strategy are the peer coaching tours that have grown as part of Sothy & Theada's Teacher & Library Coordinator roles, offering one-on-one coaching and small-group support as needed. In the most recent tour, English team from Chey and the IT, eLearning and chess team from KVLC visited our Srayang Learning Centre, while Sothy spent time with the teachers at both Koh Ker and Romchek primaries.

These sessions are based around lesson observations, practice teaching, and activity sharing in a classroom setting. Enabling instant feedback and guidance, we are finding that these sessions are especially effective in quick learning and the application of new concepts and skills.

Loving all the shots coming in from our libraries, which are increasingly colorful, creative and inclusive, with more students getting involved across various activities:

🎨 Ravuth's presence in Preah Vihear has brought a new focus on arts & crafts - revealing some budding artists at both the primaries and Srayang Learning Center
🧩 the new kindie resources we introduced earlier in the year are inspiring students' imagination and some fun creations, such as this Koh Ker lego temple!
👨‍👩‍👧 families are attending more and more reading day events, with parents joining the Top Reader awards at Srayang for the first time - giving a massive boost to students engagement in the process
📚 as does inviting other community members to come and share their love of reading

All of these activities contribute towards increasing students' engagement with the library, as well as their personal development and self-expression. Huge thanks to our library and teacher teams across all locations who put so much energy into these events!

♟🏟 Our epic chess tournament took place yesterday, with 175 matches blitzed in 5 rounds!

🏆 Prizes are awarded to the top 20 individual players, as well as the top 2 teams.

🥇 KVLC team took overall first place, with Chey coming second, and we are thrilled to see more players from SLC getting in to the top 20, where we have been increasing our chess offering in the last year.

👦 Promoting chess and bringing more sports in to our locations in general is also part of our boys' intiative to encourage engagement and combat drop out rates amongst teenage males. With a higher percentage of boys joining the tournament compared to last year, as well more ranking in the top 10 and dominating the top 5, we can see that our strategy is paying off.

🙌 Big thanks to all our chess teachers who inspire students to play. And massive congratulations to everyone who took part, because all chess players are winners in our eyes - for their competitive spirit, sportsmanship, and commitment to mastering the invaluable skills that chess brings!

Our annual Teacher & Librarian Exchange is the most comprehensive event in our training calendar, bringing together all location teaching teams & PLF HQ staff for a 2-day skills sharing and discussion session. This year’s exchange went exceptionally well and was our biggest yet, as we were able to also include IT and E-Learning as well as Grade 6 remedial teachers for the first time.

Whole-group topics included teamwork, positive discipline, modern teaching skills and self-development, while breakout room sessions focussed on individual teaching areas. First time presenters Pich, Than and Phanna did fantastically well, with fun, energetic and engaging activities across the board.

Massive well done to Sothy & Theada, who in their new Teacher & Librarian Coordinator roles took the lead on organizing all aspects of the exchange for the first time!

We are super proud of ALL our teams, who come ready to learn and participate, and take away new-found skills and techniques for their students - making this one of the most beneficial pieces in our teacher support offerings. Because strong teachers build even stronger students!

Stay tuned to see some of the session in action tomorrow, and hear directly from the participants on the key takeaways that they will apply in their classrooms ...

While the majority of PLF students come up through our location projects, sometimes students find us who show such remarkable courage, grit and determination in staying in school that we are honored in supporting them to achieve their fullest potential. One such student is Kosal, a shining example of our 'walk-in' cohort...
🎤 “I became a PLF student when I was in Grade 10. I heard that PLF help students who really need it the most. I needed to get extra classes because in government school cannot get enough knowledge to pass without paying extra to the teacher, especially in subjects like math, physics, chemistry. I was so happy when PLF approve my request. I not only got extra science classes, but also school supplies, a bicycle and the opportunity to study English.

Originally I'm from Takeo province, which is far from Siem Reap. When my father died I followed my mum as she had to look for work anywhere she could. We moved around a lot and I randomly stayed with many people so that I could continue school. I was two years in Odor Meanchy province but at that time there was a lot of fighting at the border with Thailand. So I needed to move again. Siem Reap was more stable. I came by myself and stayed with my uncle but then he went to another province. So I stayed with his son, but after a while he decided to go back to our homeland.

By this time, I was in Grade 8, and I got a job to support staying alone. I love to study since I was young, that's why I am not give up. And because of this experience I learned how to stay strong, be responsible, and do what I need for myself. I started to get a dream what I want to do in the future, about working in science, and I make a connection with a friend who has the same dream as me. And we still work together now.

We both loved to study and to explore something new and we start to create small science and technology projects. Not only formula but we take it to practice in real life. For example we created a telephone. And we study about electricity and where it come from, we make experiment with the soil that it can make a battery, it can generate electricity. Not a lot but it have a result.

We start from ourselves and we don’t have any money, but PLF and our teachers encourage us a lot. And also the government, they start to know our group. And they invite us to go and show at an exhibition at Phnom Penh.

And we're very happy because we don't think that we have that kind of power to make it happen. But we can create something we can share. We want to give our experience to everyone, especially other students. They can come and do with us.

And that's the year when we finish Grade 11. We finish that project, and we also take it to join the exhibition at Malaysia. And when we come back we finish Grade 12.

I studied IT at university and then worked as a data programmer. But now I am CEO on our startup that we execute by ourself. Our goal is to build products that solve any problem in the country. If we talk about advanced technologies, research and development, until now mostly all this is done outside the country. So we want to change that. We want to make sure that Cambodia can do advanced technologies and can research by ourselves. And deliver that product all over the country and to other countries too.

If we are strong enough, our next plan is to make sure that students around Cambodia have opportunity to explore more on technologies, besides having to go to Phnom Penh. So we want to create a fab lab that students can explore, can research and develop what kinds of product they have in their mind. If we have the lab where they can experience it, it will help them a lot. They can produce it by themselves. So this is our goal.

When I give the mentorship talk, I'm happy and proud of the students, they ask a lot of questions. And they are lucky. Because I remember when I was their age, I don't know who I can ask. Mostly I discuss only with the teachers, but they had limited education and only know general about it. So if we can ask a person with specific experience, the information is more clear and helpful. And it's a very important time for them right now, especially if they're in Grade 12.

I'm very proud of PLF because they help students a lot. And some students without this support, they will drop out of study. PLF knows why education is important. They push them to make sure that they will success in the future. So I hope we can grow and keep up and support the young generation. Because if they are thinking maybe I'm going to drop out, we need to motivate as much as possible. Re-inspire them, so they have a goal. They have a dream for their future.

Our uni mentorship teams not only hold sessions for high school students but are also increasingly reaching out to Grades 7-9 students across our locations. The sessions are based around self-development, study skills and motivating students to maintain a passion for school in what can be a difficult transition from the primary grades for many students. The mentorship teams are blended with role models studying a variety of uni or vo-tech subjects, shining a light of inspiration for the younger students on which path to take after school.

Preliminaries in our epic chess tournament are now complete!

Some great playing from our competitors, and a feat of organisation from our team. 461 matches played across the grades at our projects, with 70 students now going through to the final round.

Stay tuned for that on July 14!

May & June are busy months for our mentorship teams. With lots of public holidays, and a break between semesters, it's a great time of the year to pack in sessions before Grade 12s have to start focussing on the national exams ahead.

Our uni mentors have hit the road in all directions to get to our projects. We've welcomed many impressive PLF uni graduates to speak for the first time, representing between them a wide range of career paths - from law, data science & telecommunications engineering, to banking, teaching & accounting. Current uni students also join the teams, offering insights into how to prep for entrance exams, the move away from home for the first time and adapting to university life in the big city.

Huge thanks to mentors Kosal, Pong, Konnga, Ryta, Sotheiy, Seang, Nana, Visak & Namva for sharing their time and invaluable insights. It's a huge boost to high schoolers at this crucial time in their education, as they focus their attention on the future beyond school.
