"Putting uncertified teachers in classrooms comes at a cost to student learning and the teachers themselves; imagine the stories that wait to be told of teachers who did not make it to their second year."

UT researchers discovered 52% of newly hired teachers in Texas lack certification and classroom experience, causing significantly lower student performance and job retention. The study published on Sept. 9 has resulted in calls for investing in greater teacher preparation programs and pushing for policy changes.

No Kid Hungry Texas released the results of a poll on Sept. 3, which revealed that 76% of Texans are finding it harder to afford groceries as food prices increase faster than income. This difficulty causes many to settle for unhealthier diets, especially college students whose academic performances are at risk.

The Austin City Council granted UT almost half a million dollars to help improve birth outcomes and maternal health for women of color by renewing a contract with the University on Thursday. Through this agreement, Mama Sana Vibrant Woman and the Alliance for African American Health will provide free support and education for families, pregnant women and mothers of color.

No. 4 Texas women’s golf is in full swing this season with new head coach Laura Ianello leading a roster of nine into the difficult SEC. The team’s drive for its first national championship has been renewed, starting with the Mason Rudolph Golf championship tournament this weekend.

The city of Austin received $10.5 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation on Sept. 5 to go toward a project that benefits pedestrian safety infrastructure. The project aims to reduce fatal injuries and collisions by implementing hybrid beacons, crossing islands and curb extensions across nearly 50 Austin locations.
