We’re most often asked, in a sea of VTOLs, why should I consider a fixed wing?

Easy!

- You can’t fight aerodynamics! A true fixed wing is the most efficient aircraft form. This means true long-range flight. Albatross offers up to 4 hrs of flight time on batteries alone.
- Fixed-wing aircraft are inherently more stable in high winds. We love showing off the Albatross when the winds are howling. No need to ground aircraft or delay your mission. We routinely take off in > 30 mph winds.
- Fixed wings like Albatross have a larger payload capacity than most quads or VTOLs. This allows our customers to carry more and bigger sensors as well as twin sensor configurations and vital supplies for things like search and rescue missions, package delivery, and humanitarian aid.

Albatross serves up 4 hrs of fully autonomous flight from takeoff through to landing ✈️

This past year we’ve had the pleasure of working alongside our colleagues at a handful of talented companies to develop test platforms for FAA-funded research into Right of Way rules for UAS.

Conducted by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the University of North Dakota, and The University of Kansas, this research will help define the rules necessary for right-of-way traffic for autonomous aircraft to fly Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS), below 400 feet above ground level, within the national airspace system. These efforts may potentially assist in modifying the existing FAA rules for commercial UAS operations.

This week, we’re thrilled to host teams from all three Universities here in Austin for flight training as the planning and design phase of this project comes to a close and they prepare for flight testing.

Closing out the week with a great visit from our friends at MSU's Raspet Flight Research Laboratory. Winds were howling. Computers were literally blown off tables. But it gave us an excellent opportunity to showcase one of the critical design features of the Albatross - stability in HIGH winds.

A perfect autonomous flight with flawless auto takeoff and landing. Not too shabby.

A very frosty but beautiful Austin morning! We’re in the field today testing out new hardware, and inadvertently getting in some below freezing flights.

Covid uncovered supply chain inadequacies on a global scale. For the past several years, manufacturing businesses like ours have gotten used to waiting 6-8 months for the delivery of mission-critical components.

Applied Aeronautics has always taken the approach that if it's unavailable or too expensive, we'll make it ourselves. The same was true of our approach to overcoming these delays. Over the past year, we've been developing a full suite of system agonistic components that are both robust and affordable.

We'll be releasing them over the next several weeks, starting with our Microhard Carrier Board. Compatible with most pmddl and pddl modems, our board contains build in ethernet, serial, and USB C ports, active cooling, and the ability to easily swap modules via an oboard socket (ie. no more soldering).
